Poland taken to court over right-hand drive vehicles
Thursday 29 September 2011
The European Commission decided, on 29 September, to refer Poland to the EU Court of Justice since it maintains obstacles to the registration of right-hand drive vehicles on its territory. National legislation requires that the steering wheel be placed on the left-hand side of the vehicle, which means in practice that new or used right-hand drive vehicles cannot be registered. According to the EU executive, this restriction represents an obstacle to the import of such vehicles from other member states and is disproportionate to the legitimate public policy objective of ensuring road safety and protecting human life and health.
