Headlight relay: where is it?

Mitsubishi Delica L400 production commenced in 1994 -- After much anticipation, the L400 arrived on Canadian Soil in 2009!

Headlight relay: where is it?

Post by jcolvin »

Anyone know where the headlight relay is located? I'm thinking that rather than wiring in a DTRL module it will be more elegant to just energize the stock low beam headlight relay directly. Only trouble is I'm not sure where it is.

I own an L300 so I won't be too helpful.

Could this possibly contain the answer you're looking for?

Thanks! Looking at the wiring diagram, ( http://www.delica.ca/manuals/L-400%20Ma ... dlamps.PDF) it looks like it should work, so long as I disconnect the headlight relay from the column switch. otherwise if i energize the headlight relay I'll also energive the column switch and probably turn on the rear lights.

Interestingly, the shop manual show a DTRL relay module that does not appear on our vehicles. The wiring diagram doesn't show it either.

Hi, not owning a L400, but often having to help fix their headlights, and not wanting to troll thru L400 downloads since I don't own one... but willing to carry a few printed pages in the van to help out others ....

Chris, where did you get that sketch you posted? Is there more to it that would be useful for me to keep on hand?

JColvin, is there any notes on the wiring diagram as to origin, I know the L300 diagram we all refer to is for European models, which are very different from our JDM.

Anyone got a good wiring diagram just for headlight and ignition, since that's what we need when someone on a camping trip needs help. PM me if you have something but don't want to post it.

Cheers, Christine.

hmmm , looking at the wiring diagram it looks like the lights are ground-switched. means it's more complicated to use the main headlights as DTRL, since a standard dtrl module won't work. in that case probably best to use the park lights. I'm surprised there seems to be nothing on this board about daytime running lights on the L400.

hi, i just do it separate to the headlight,
if you do it together with the headlight it wont last long your combination switch will fry later
not compatible for DRL hock up to the headlight
combination switch expensive

Christine, that picture is from the 95 L400 workshop manual - electrical wiring. I don't think it has been uploaded to this site yet. The file is PHWE9407_L400_95_electrical_wiring.pdf.

thanks all. i ended up using "spare" turn lights for DTRL. these are the japan-style lights that come on on the left or right when the turn signals are on. just snipped the wires and wired into a ign+. no need to worry about ground switched headlights or anything. they are brighter than the parking lights, and are optically separate from the turn signals so i think they should be fine compliance-wise.

Those are parking lights and they are not suitable for daytime running lights no matter what bulb you put in there.

You need to either use the main headlights or install separate lights for daytime lights (what the majority do).

The side marker lights that you are trying to pass as daytime running lights will not pass inspection as those lights are not meant for straight beam.
