Experience with rotating vs. not rotating tires and just replacing 2 tires at a time when front ones wear out?

I always rotated my L300 tires to spread out the wear but David at Rising sun (mechanic) was recommending to just leave the fronts until they are worn and then just replace the front tires so you're only replacing 2 tires instead of 4. Rear tires apparently shouldn't wear that much so shouldn't be many issues the 5% of the time I put the van in to 4WD after front tire replacement anyways (e.g. your new front wheels have a larger diameter than rear wheels which will have some wear).

Sophomore Delica owner. L300 first one,now on L400 in Vancouver, BC.

Have had Yokohama Geolanders on now for 13 months and used through winter as they are great in the snow so was considering rotating tires after 1 year.

I've got the same issues as many other sea-to-sky owners that with a lot of our driving on the ever-winding sea-to-sky highway the outside tread of the front tires wears off pretty quick from the constant turning All the weight of the engine is on the front tires and we know the Delicas don't love to turn so hence the high wear.

On my L300 i rotated every year religously and also had winter and summer tires and all 8 tires had the outside tread pretty worn so this solution really appeals to me.

I like the Geolanders so happy to keep that tire going for the life of the van.

It doesn't matter what you drive, you should rotate every second oil change. That's what I do. My LT Geolandars typically last four or five years before they reach the "It's getting near time to replace your tyres" cross bar in the tread. Keeping them inflated to a optimum PSI also helps, mine are at 41PSI. Too much pressure and you prematurely wear the middle of the tread pattern. Too little pressure and you prematurely wear the edges of the tread pattern.

Also, there are other things one must be aware of regarding tyres: They get old and can do things like de-laminate, which can be a real drag when it happens while you're doing ninety kliks down some remote highway. :(

Thanks Falco. You're in North Van, do you drive the Sea to Sky a lot and see the same wear issue focused on outside tread? Unavoidable no matter what PSI you're at.

Sea to sky definitely one of the curviest highways out there....

I think I've been running mine around 35 PSI so will try upping them. Didn't drive the S2S a ton this winter so first year on Geolanders looking pretty good.

"Don't the tires rotate as you drive?"...that's what she said. :-D

But seriously, folks, when you rotate them which tires go where? Just swap front and back on the same sides?
I guess that depends on if they are uni-directional or bi-directional treads?

I rotate mine every 10k km, and am running general Grabbers AT2. Since thy have no recommend rotation while on the wheel I swap them in the X pattern. however I still haven't managed to avoid the front tires feathering. :-(
