L400 doesn’t start

Mitsubishi Delica L400 production commenced in 1994 -- After much anticipation, the L400 arrived on Canadian Soil in 2009!

L400 doesn’t start

Post by Lukas80 »

When I tried starting the motor this morning, it kept turning over, but wouldn’t start. It’s been an ongoing issue, but it usually starts up after 3 or 4 turning the ignition. What’s weird is that occasionally it starts up on first ignition.
I tried for a while but after about 5min the battery drained.
Sometimes the celinoid disengaged when trying to start.

Any ideas?

Sounds like a fuel delivery system issue. In the past when it did start would it die after a couple of minutes then start again and be fine the rest of the day? That would indicate a front seal on your injection pump. If the seal is worn out it allows oil into the fuel system. Not sure the L400 has a fuel cut off solenoid on the pump, but I may be wrong.

It has been stalling occasionally when I would stop at a light or come to near halt. When I would let go of the gas pedal and take a turn too.

Is this diesel of gas? I'm only familiar with the diesel system. Sounds like a fuel pump issue though or.possibly air leak.

Is it making a chuffing type noise when it does start? How many km's? Could also be timing chain has stretched. I know I keep throwing things at you, but its difficult to diagnose from my couch.

It has about 163950 km. It usually starts quite rough. Sometimes I have to pump the pedal until it goes into a nice idle. Not sure about the chuffing type noise.
No worries I really appreciate your help!

It also seems to leak diesel from the fuel filter air valve on the bottom, I am not sure if that might be related?

That definitely related and out of all the things we've discussed the best scenario. You have an air leak and either just need to tighten your fuel filter and the water sensor on the bottom of the filter or you may need a new fuel filter housing. It stalls out because you are sucking in air. It won't start for the same reason also.

Good luck! Coombs country auto will have the parts. If it's leaking from the bottom water sensor you may just need a new gasket. Change your filter while your at it, because why not.....

How do I bleed the fuel line once I reinstalled the filter?

There is a bleed plug bolt on the filter housing. Pump the top to build up pressure then undo the bolt to release the pressure. Repeat until some diesel comes out. Alternately you can purchase some seafoam injection system cleaner and fill the filter with that before you install it. Less pumping and gives the injectors a good shot of cleaner. No need to dilute the seafoam, the diesel will run on the stuff happily.

Good luck

Awesome thank you.
I ordered a new fuel filter, but it looks like I need a new air valve too. For some reason it just keeps dripping diesel out of it. I I opened it up and it all looks fine, even the little o ring on that screw on plastic piece. Why would it be dripping like that?
