Hi there,
I have an issue with my 1996 L400 diesel delica. After the engine as been running, usually starts happening when i am moving. When i let go gas and the van needs more power i get a power lost and black smoke comes out of the exhaust and I can hear a clicking noise to the engine. So it ususally happens when taking off...the van lose power and black smoke comes out. Then if i park it an have it in park i can press the fuel peddle and have the same noise and smoke.
EGR Valve? The engine seems to run well when just idling.
I was stuck in a storm in the beginning of January2018 and this issus happened the day after.
Pardon my english, I am an Acadian.
Thanks everyone.

Sounds like EGR valve if you haven't had it blocked off (which I would recommend doing). If you have a knocking sounds at idle it could also be injectors. I would start with the EGR though.Delica_Acadie wrote:Hi there,

Thanks for the reply. Here is a video of the sound of the engine when that noise happens. The noise goes away. I was told by the great team at Coombs County Auto that the noise could possibly be from the fuel pump that would need tuning.

Sounds like diesel knock which could be injectors or your injection pump timing (which is what I think CC Auto mentioned). I would start with the inexpensive stuff first. Blanking off your EGR valve is cheap and easy to do and has solved a lot of black smoke/power loss problems for many. New injectors are about $400. A rebuilt injection pump is $1400. I may be wrong, but unless you had some work done where the timing of the injection pump was changed I don't see how it could change on its own. Unless your timing chain is stretched out, but that would cause a "chuffing" type noise.

Thanks for your help I will try that. Ordering it now. Not sure how to install it if you have a little info.
I have to share this...A guy from here has been rebuilding tractors a long time, hands in diesel mechanic ....he told me to try diesel conditionner and add to a full tank a quart of automatic transmission oil in the diesel. He says its gonna clean it and might fix the issue. Thanks again and I will keep the community updated

If it's the injectors and your diesel has gelled a bit from the cold temps that may help. Good idea to use an additive in your diesel for lubrication. Some old school diesel guys swear by transmission fluid or 2 stroke oil.Delica_Acadie wrote:Thanks for your help I will try that. Ordering it now. Power Lost and black smoke! (VIDEO) WAS TOLD THAT INJECTION PUMP NEED TO BE TUNED
This issue happened the next Day after i drove in a huge storm for 6 hours then i had to stop for the night as roads were closed down. In the middle of that trip i stopped and under the hood there was lots of snow. The next morning i let it idle a while and it all melted away. And its from that morning that i started to hear that noise. Like you said , i havent touche the fuel injection pump to detune it.
