Brakes - ABS Tone Rings- Help!

Post by sinjin »

Hey All,

I just had my front brake calipers replaced a few weeks ago (sticking), as well as pads and rotors. However, when my mechanic attempted to swap the rotors out, he balked at trying to re-use the ABS tone rings from the old rotors as he said they were stuck/corroded and he was positive he'd break them if he tried to use brute force to free them (see picture of the old rotors/tone rings). Unfortunately, apparently do to the 'dumb design' of these rotors, you cant swap rotors out without first freeing the ABS tone rings from them.

He doesn't seem willing to go the 'patient' route of using some ant-seize and working very slowly at them as recommended by some peole - probably because the vehicle would be taking up one of his hoists. So he put the old rotors back on for now, and told me to try to source new ABS tone rings (and probably the bolt hardware that attaches them?) Anyways, I'd like to get the new front rotors on, but still have ABS funcitonal. Can anyone tell me the part number for the ABS tone rings for a 96 L400 (Series 1 Super Exceed) and possibly associated hardware? Or even better tell me where to source them? Coombs Country Auto doesn't currently have any in stock, by the way. I see on Amayama, that there are some parts available, but I don't see the things I'm after I don't think...unless I'm mistaken. For your reference, here are the two amayama pages for the associated parts I've been looking at.

1) Amayama Front Brake Parts: http://mitsubishi.epc-data.com/delica_s ... eel-brake/
2) Amayama Front Axle Hub & Drum: http://mitsubishi.epc-data.com/delica_s ... -hub-drum/

Also, one of my rear calipers is now sticking as well pretty badly, so rear brakes probably need overhauling as well. For the rears, I'm planning on going with NAPA calipers, rotors and pads (for 96 Montero...apparently interchangeable for rears). However, I'm now worried about ABS tone rings for those too. Do the rears have ABS tone rings to worry about as well?

Thanks All!

Here's the diagram from Partsouq which might help you see the bits you're after. https://partsouq.com/en/catalog/genuine ... =354252&q=

I also found these on Ebay, which look about right: http://www.ebay.com/itm/MITSUBISHI-L400 ... 1677091841
Nothing says "poor workmanship" more than wrinkles in the duct tape.

Shogo at Japanoid in New West has at least one of those tone rings because I needed one for my 98 S2 L400, but unfortunately for me it wasn't the correct one. It looks exactly like what you have in the picture. Also for the rears in my S2, the tone ring isn't in the rotor, its somewhere near the end of the axle. I don't remember exactly but if you follow the sensor cable you'll see its not in the rotor, at least on mine.
