Hi there,

Temp drop here in Vancouver again has caused my l400 to rear it's cold start issues again. Will turn over and idle perfectly in the cold but after what seems to be around 2 mins it will start to struggle and stall (every time it's around 0 degrees or below). If i start driving right away sometimes i can keep a steady foot on the gas and it comes good but if I'm parked and do not apply gas it will stall every time. After it does stall, it's usually more difficult to get it to start but once it does it's completely fine. It will not stall again.

I've had glow plugs, bus bar, battery and such all checked by CVI and all are in normal working parameters.

Anyone else had this kind of problem?

Cheers good people!

Front seal on fuel pump - letting air into the system, common problem :)

In the early stages of failure the seal is still springy enough to keep sealing despite being worn, but when it's cold the rubber seal isn't as springy as usual and can't maintain a seal. Eventually it'll wear enough that it will leak all the time.

Mine does this sometimes in cool weather. I think it could be moisture from condensation in the fuel tank or somewhere in the fuel delivery system. It will run rough and stall and be fairly hard to start again sometimes. Then it will settle down and be fine. It seems to do it when we get down around zero. Never had it happen in winter when it's -10 or -20 so that's why I think it could be condensation. Below -20 and I often don't even bother trying to drive it as it's not at all happy starting at these temps. At -25 I often can't even get the doors open because the locks seem to tighten up and won't unlock. Yeah, I live in Alberta so we get real winter. It's generally low humidity here but I do live a block from the bow river and so I think humidity is more of a factor. My gasoline car seems to get a few hiccups sometimes when it cools down too.
I try to keep the tank fairly full and I use Diesel Kleen additive. Fuel additive is supposed to add lubricity agents that help with longevity of the seals in the fuel pump.

Mine does the same thing, I’ll try replacing the seal.
