ac issues

Mitsubishi Delica L400 production commenced in 1994 -- After much anticipation, the L400 arrived on Canadian Soil in 2009!

ac issues

Post by jos_mclean »

Hi everyone
it is starting to get hot out and I am having some issues with my air conditioning, that i am hoping someone can help with. the ac seems to work well when driving and great going up a hill, but doesn't seem to work when at idle or driving slowly? had it to an ac shop and they couldn't figure it out, thought maybe tx valve but really not sure. 1995 delica exceed 2.8l td dual zone ac
Thanks

Sounds like it works well when you have air blowing over the fins - or - that the compressor works well at higher RPM, but not at idle.

Try it parked at higher RPM.

Your compressor may be on the way out.

Did the AC shop do a system test with a pressure gauge to read both idle and mid range RPM's?

My AC did the same as yours...ran okay when driving but put out warm air at idle. My issue was low refrigerant.

The fill connector is in a horrible location which makes it hard to get at....most techs need to remove the battery just to get at it properly.

Sorry no. AC on older systems can be finicky especially when you got a JDM.

The Mitsubishi dealers can do the recharge and testing as the connectors are all standard. all they need to know is the system's fluid volume.

do you need a recharge? The kits from Princess Auto/partsource also work quite well but the inlet port is in a tight location very near the AC pump on both the L300 and L400. I did this last year on mine and it puts out plenty of cold air....at least until the idler pulley bearing started making noises last week. Thankfully the NSK bearing is removable which will be very inexpensive compared to a whole pulley assembly.

it does seem to get colder when parked and running at higher rpm. AC shop didn't notice any issues with coolant level.

I doubt your compressor is the issue with your latest update.....it's more likely that the refrigerant volume is low.

Delia's use a lot of AC fluid mainly because they have 2 systems. Did the shop have the factory pressure specs for your Deli? OR did they base it on what they thought was close?

shop did not have the factory specs, so must have based their assumptions on past experience from other vehicles

The same questions come up every year this time. LOL

Refrigerant will leak out so expect to need a refill and (lastly) repair/replacement with 15-20 yr old delicas :M .

Engage the AC switch, if the compr kicks in the problem is usually with refridgrant. If it squeals tighten the belt.

Buy the pressure guage kit from princess auto and check it yourself. :-D :-D No pressure , needs refidgerant.....

Don't buy the leak repair :-( , it just coats the inside of the system and prevents good system operation.

Look for oil stains at the compressor or fittings for evidence of an oil leak.

Charge the system one bottle at a time, wait a few minutes, till the cold air temp at the vents comes down to specs. KISS Specs are generally a differential of ambient to vent temperature. It's a big double system and needs lot of refridgerant and time to balence. Look up the spec or ask a shop the differential temp at the vent.

If the vent temp won't stay down something is leaking and probably the compressor O rings are at fault. Then the system has to be evacuated, repaired and recharged.

Use the AC system once a week all year round to maintain the system pressure and the compressor O rings.

That's the simple version. Did I miss something?

I agree with BB, most times the refridgerant is the culprit. :-D

I have the install kit if you want to try it. I would check pressures before you buy anything. Give me a call if you want. I live in Rayleigh!

Update. turned out to be the compressor which completely blew its bearing and became obvious this spring. priced out to fix it but ended up just selling the van and upgrading to a super exceed for the same price. problem solved
