Hey all,
I'm starting to do my own work on Delly.
First order of business: put in a block heater. I have the block heater (from CCAutos) and am ready to go. In order to do so, I need to drain the coolant. I bought some:
OEM Premium Antifreeze/Coolant
Recommended For:
Infiniti, Mazda, Nissan, Mitsubishi
from PartSource.
Is this the right stuff? I don't want to go to all the trouble of putting in a block heater only to have the wrong coolant.
Also, from what I've found, the coolant capacity seems to be 11 litres? But it seems like I don't need to drain all of it to get a block heater in. Or is it always best to drain it all and replace it? I got her from Mardy in July, so I'm assuming the coolant that would be left in there is still good.
Thoughts?

Go to the shop manual in "L400 Dedicated Category Reference Forum" in Delica Cacnada Technical.

Re: Coolant Type (& Capacity)
I looked there and the best I found was "High Quality Ethylene Glycol Antifreeze Coolant" next to the numbers 4G63, 4G64 and an "amount" of 8 (9) dm3, or conversely the number 4D56 (which I believe is the L300 engine) and the amount 9 (10) dm3. This has not cleared things up, because it looks like the L400 manual only has information for the L300 engine, and possibly two other engines that I've never heard of, but no 4M40, and the numbers don't make any sense to me anyway. Am I missing something?

Re: Coolant Type (& Capacity)
Hmm... Funny that? Ironically I actually get a lot of information for my L300 from the L400 manual because some of the L400 cargo models have similar parts like the rear axle for 4WD leaf spring, drum brakes, &c., which I use as reference.
What I would recommend in this case is what I do: Drain the radiator & engine and measure what comes out. I like to mix my anti-freeze to water - 40/60, respectively, if that's any help but living in Winterpeg maybe you want to go to 50/50. When you replace the coolant, run the engine with the rad cap off for a few minutes and watch for air bubbles and coolant levels going down and top up as necessary. Thing to remember here is my system is different on the L300/4D56 than the L400/4M40.
Sorry I can't help you out more than that.

Re: Coolant Type (& Capacity)
Drain the coolant from the drain plug located on the drivers side of the radiator. Don't turn it all the way out or it will spray everywhere. Also remove the rad cap from the overflow tank.
Coolant is good for 3-5 years but should be checked annually with a glycol hydrometer for proper strength. You want a rating of around -35 to -38 C.
Test the coolant in your catch basin....if the strength is good then reuse it....make note of the color. The orange stuff is usually long life stuff and is not compatable with green glycol blends. Prestone, Canadian Tire brand, Most green versions are compatable. Check to see if you bought premix or full strength stuff as you may need to add water to the coolant to get the ratio to that -35 to -38 C range. Any lower than that and the coolant wont work properly.
As for the block heater you will need to drain most of the coolant anyway or risk spilling all over the road/garage/driveway....very messy!
11 liters is about right for a totally empty system.
When you refill the coolant.....look for an air bleed tube between the intercooler and heater box intake vent (passenger side firewall). Its a small plastic bolt that must be removed to evacuate trapped air from the system. I posted about this in the L400 tech section on how to change a thermostat and temp sensor.

Re: Coolant Type (& Capacity)
When I replaced my rad I researched fluids to determine what was best. I talked to Butch at CVI and he recommended the MOPAR/Chrysler green coolant for it's additives and high quality. He said it is better for the engine compared to other general fluids.

Coolant Type (& Capacity)
Is there a problem using the orange/red coloured Canadian Tire Diesel lomg life coolant in the L400 if rad is flushed of previous coolant?
Thanks all!
