1999 Series 2 Chamonix error codes

Post by poochike »

Hello,

I bought my Series 2 Chamoix roughly a year ago and have nicknamed it the White Lemon. I've been getting an intermittent check engine light that I can't seem to make go away. The error codes are 41 - Throttle Solenoid Valve. (in the inlet air path) and 43 - Timing Control Fuel Pump System. The van runs fairly well, but I do get some black smoke on acceleration (more then I think is normal), some diesel knock when starting in the morning and fuel consumption is high (about 400km/tank). I had the EGR cleaned out, but have since capped off the vacuum hose to the actuator thinking that may be the cause of the black smoke.

I thought the error code 41 would be related to the solenoid and the throttle body as the series 2 has a valve inside the throttle body that a solenoid engages. I've tested the solenoid and it works fine. Butch (CVI) capped off the vacuum hose to the throttle body just in case it was slamming shut when it wasn't suppose to. The other error code, 43, I have no idea what's up with that. Butch did the injection timing on it, but to no avail. It runs better since he got his hands on it, but I still get these error codes. Wondering if anyone else has experienced this and how they may have dealt with it.

Cheers

Disconect the battery and see if the codes reset when you reconnect the battery.

Hey greenfox,

Will give that a go and see if it works.

We met around 8 or 9 months ago in the Princess Auto parking lot in Coquitlam. I didn't have my L400 with me at the time though. Anyhow, thanks for the advice.

Here's the instrucitons from the UK Delica site:

http://www.mdocuk.co.uk/forums/viewtopi ... rror+codes

To get the error codes do the following

(ANYONE GOT THE OBD PIN TRANSLATION PIC????)

- Turn off the engine and remove the key from the ignition
- Connect pin 1 to the metal chassis, with a length of wire
- Start the engine as usual
- The dash will light up as usual and the warning lights will all go off
- After going out like a normal start the A/T light will begin a sequence of flashing on and off (error codes)
- A long flashes indicates 10's. Short flashes indicates 1. (So for an error code of 11 you get one long and one short flash)
- It may give more than one error code, these are separated by a short pause, otherwise it will just keep cycling through and repeat the codes again.

However there is a way to read the fault codes by using the vehicle dashboard A/T warning light and a bit of wire with a crocodile clip on one end. The gearbox computer stores errors so you don't have to do this at the time of the problem. Its memory is reset by disconnecting the battery, which will also have the additional affect of returning the gear changing back to its default setting until it adjusts to your method of driving.

Error codes were the solenoid pack that controls the egr and the throttle body. They commonly go south on the series 2. Amayama has them for about $200.

Black smoke in the end was the injection pump. Put in a known good used one and the fuel consumption and smoke has corrected itself. I also did the injectors, turbo, blanked egr, glow plugs, etc.

Are you getting an error code and what Are your symptoms?

Thank you. I will pass this on to the mechanic. On description of error to Rising Sun they said they thought it is Emission Solenoids. I'm in Nelson so have a local mechanic working on it. They did a bunch of work last year which really helped but the problem has returned. Loss of power uphill - black smoke, goes super slow about 40-60km.
