OD switch/replacement cost. Looking for ladder for L400 SE

Post by del_man »

Hello, I am new here, just got Delica 95 L400 Super Exceed.
In general its in a good shape but needs some TLC.
I wonder how much is OD drive switch, is it difficult to replace?
Also, I am looking for a rear spoiler and a ladder...
Thank you.

The OD switch is integrated into the shift arm and can't be purchased separate from the shifter arm.

The removal of the shifter arm is done by removing the 5 screws that hold the plastic cowl around the steering column then removing the cowl.
Unplugging the 3 wire coupler.
Pushing the shifter pin to release the shifter arm. Its all one peice.

Sometimes the switch itself can be repaired. The usual break is a small peice of the internal plastic that the switch spring sits against. There is a repair procedure on the UK delica websites and I think we have something here on our forum as well.

The repair can be tricky but if you can work on plastic models or small electronics this fix is possible.

An option would be to install a dash switch that allows power to flow to 2 different contacts because when the switch is OFF the dash OD light comes on and when the switch is ON the transmission solenoid is active....so you need to carry power to 2 different circuits for this to work properly.

This may help you with your OD switch repair.

Or, some guys just bypass it with a separate switch placed on the dash. Instructions are here:

I have read on both this and the UK site that there are very few of them that work when we get them. I repaired mine as in the first link except I fashioned a small plate from thin aluminum. I screwed it on the end of the switch. It works fine now. I don't know what a new switch costs.

Is your Delica a high roof or a low roof? I have a Terzo ladder for a low roof that I am selling.

I have been quoted 150$ (new part + labour) to replace it, is it worth it?

My Delica is a Super Exceed, so I assume its a high roof, I guess your ladder wont fit...

How about cracked center of the dash? Easy to replace (part accessibility and actual work)?

I would be also looking for a rear spoiler.

Thanks for your replies guys.

Depends on how handy you are if you consider the shift lever replacement worth it. I personally would just shim the broken plastic with metal, but to each their own.

Cracked dash bits are quite common. Depending on what is cracked will determine the cost.

Have a look at this link for getting the dash apart. It helped me.

This is great!
I wont be replacing it, I will try to glue and paint it...
Cyanoacrylate glues melt some plastics and bond them well so if it would do it for the dash, the fixing should be easy.

The center dash cover can be very brittle after 16+ years of Japan sun. I tried epoxies, JB weld and Cyanocrylate glues.....my part was just to far gone and lost all of its flex. I just bit the bullet and bought a new one. There is a guy in calgary that was selling a new unit on Kijiji.

Haven't check in a while. They aren't cheap but a new one will save you hours of frustration if yours is beyond saving.

As you said they can be pricy, if my attempts to fix it fail, then I will dish out 300$ for a new one.
