Floor shifter not engaging lights on dash are flashing

Post by archieim »

So today I was running a little late. I was on a job site where 4x4 is the only option if you wanted to get near the house on the property.
At the end of the day I left the house and drove off the property. I stopped when I was on pavement. While I was trying to get it out of 4L, (I was stopped but still in drive). I wasn't thinking and pulled the floor shifter. It dropped from 4L to what I think is 4H.
The shifter seemed to be in a free play and it no longer had any give or resistance.
There were no noises or any pop or grinding.
Cd lock light was off but the front two lights were flashing. Which is what I'm guessing is 4H. I parked the van and had my wife drive out to pick me up.
My questions is how do I get the floor shifter to work and could I drive it home that way. What did I do to my van? Is there something I could do... a simple fix ?

I got a second and third opinion and was able to confirm that I could drive it home. Drove it straight to the mechanic.
Turns out I snapped my little shifter engager. It also turns out it has been welded before so it was doomed to begin with.
I'm awaiting parts but should be fixed by the middle of next week.

The key snapping off the end of shifter can occur when too much force is used to change in and out of the 4WD modes. The end is so thin it only takes one hard shift to cause a crack which eventually shears off.

Quite surprised yours was welded as the metal is very grainy and would not normally accept a weld.

I broke mine as well a few years ago as well and now I keep a spare at home just incase it hppens again.
Yeah I joined the Dark Side because the medical plan is top shelf!

Yes I'm a little sad about it.
I Didn't force it either at least I didn't think I did.
It was previously welded by another owner. I'm finding out he wasn't a handy guy. He Mickey moused stuff, lots of temporary fixes. The metal was pretty weak especially after he welded it.
I was hoping this one wasn't so molested [emoji34][emoji45]
But I'm working though the bugs.
