roof racks

Post by brewskie »

Greetings. I am shopping for racks for my newly acquired 2002 high roof L400. My question is would the Thule high roof 387 gutter mount (8 inch hight) give enough clearance? The super high roof with 11 inch hight seems excessive......also there is a company from Australia called rhino rack. Anyone have experience with them?

Cheers and happy long weekend!

I have some 'SDG' roof racks that came on mine from Japan when I bought it. I have a 1997 High roof.
The feet measure 9" from bottom of foot to the bottom of the rack.
There is 1 3/4"" clearance between the roof and the bottom of the roof rack.

I have the 3 Bars heavy duty from Rhino Rack on mine. It is the 210mm legs. It works awesome and looks pretty good. I ordered it from modula rack in Vancouver. You can get it from amazon.ca as well probably and sometimes amazon has some open package for some great deal.

We went through this exact conundrum this summer and actually bought the 8" feet and found that, while the bar did clear the roof in the back, it did not have enough clearance to get our Thule roofbox onto it - the feet didn't have enough space to clamp. We may have been able to do it by lifting the box an inch or two while we tightened the feet, but we had no desire to do that every time. We ended up returning the 8" and get the 11". It rides a little high, but it's better than not being able to get the box on top at all.

Hi guys thanks for the input. Seems the Rhino rack gives a little higher clearance than the high roof (not super high roof) Thule. I might entertain that idea.

Cheers

I just purchased the Thule 387 mounts - any other feedback of whether or not these are a good choice? I'm wanting a rack to haul my canoes, so clearance for a carrier with clamps isn't necessary.

Just mounted up some 387 feet (L400 crystal lite roof) this weekend and they have a good amount of clearance, attached my Thule box with no issues.
