Injection pump timing
After many hours of trying to purchase the dial gauge tool to set injector pump timing I have finally managed to get the correct tool . When replacing timing belts we have started adjusting the pump timing and it makes a big difference to the way these vans start and drive . No more rough idle , no more excessive black smoke just a nice smooth engine . Also a quick tip on vibrations and `squeaking` at idle - change the engine mounts . It is amazing how far sagged the engine mounts are on all these vans no matter whether its done 60k or 200k all the mounts are proving to be low . When the mounts callapse badly a random squeak can be heard on start up and idle whick is the upper plate of the mount rubbing on the lower plate . These mounts are not too expensive and only take just over an hour to change .

Re: Injection pump timing
Hello Glen, can I bring my van down to have you set the injection pump timing? How long would this take and how booked up are you?
And when can you open up a satellite garage in Powell to service the three Delica's here in town?
Cheers,
Kev

Re: Injection pump timing
The pump timing is fairly easy to do and only takes about an hour and a half . The manual says to remove all injector lines to gain access but I have found that by removing the fuel filter assembly and throttle cable it can be done fairly easily . Also the top belt cover /fan and upper rad hose have to come off . Give me a call at the shop or PM me and I can set up a time .

Re: Injection pump timing
Engine mounts are only available from Mitsubishi in Japan . I have not found anything in Canada . I have four sets here and they are back ordered in Japan right now .

Re: Injection pump timing
just got my van back from cc yesterday and i can't believe the difference. i had noticed an increasing lack of power and glenn suggested that the pump timing was out. well it was a mile out. glenn replaced the timing belts, fan belts, kick down cable (a problem i knew i had) rad hose and oils. it runs so much better. he certainly knows these vans and engines.
thanks again glenn, top service

I have tech manual in pdf format which addresses the inj pump timing proceedure for the 4d56 td if anyone would like it. Many other things L300 as well.
Best regards from New Zealand,

Re: Injection pump timing
Did he happen to say what the timing was and what he set it to?
I'm thinking about having mine checked and set, but the european manual says 9 deg, the japanese sticker on my van says 7 deg, and the people on the street say 4 is good for canada (since we didn't have NOx limits) so I'd like to know what the target is, or should be, before having it adjusted. No sense doing it twice.

Re: Injection pump timing
The angle is just the position at which the timing is set not like a gas engine thats timing is set to an angle . All L300`s are the same pump timing europe or asia , only gas engine vary to different parts of the world . The pump timing is to be set at seven degrees with the engine off . It also takes about forty minutes to check and adjust .

Re: Injection pump timing
Okay, so as I suspected the sticker on the van is the one to go with, the (european?) engine manual PDF says to set it at 9, dunno why it would be different. I'm assuming mine's out a bit since it shakes quite violently when first started, there's a decent amount of smoke under load and a possible lack of power...
Any suggestions for a reliable shop in the GVRD?

Re: Injection pump timing
I don`t really know any shops on the mainland but I know a fairly good one one the Island near Parksville !!!! The problem is going to be finding a shop with the correct tool to set the pump . It cost me over $500 and took me almost six months to find . I may be coming through Vancouver in the next few weeks if you require mobile service . It is done on the ground and needs to be cold but would only take 30-40mins with minimal tools and no hoist requires .

Re: Injection pump timing
That's a wonderful offer, I don't really know for sure that the timing is off, I'm just assuming it wasn't checked and set since that tool is pretty specific and most just leave it if it works... What would you charge for the 'mobile service' ? If you want, you can PM me the details.
