Black smoke L300

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

Black smoke L300

Post by fred4130 »

Hello,

I just bought a Delica L300 4D56 and I noticed something that I didn't see when I tried the car with the previous owner ...
When I'm on full throttle or at least not on good rpm (like when I have to pass a hill on the highway) there is a lot of black smoke getting out of the exhaust.
When I drive easy, nothing special, but when I push it's really the mess at the back of the car ...
The injection pomp was rebuilt 40 000 km ago so it think it's good, the air filter is like a new one.
So I was thinking it could be the injectors ? That's the original one, I don't know when they have to be replaced.
What do you think ?

Thanks in advance,
Fred

Black smoke L300

A little black smoke is normal (the engines are quite primitive), but a James Bond style smokescreen is too much. Your description sounds like one of two things:

-Not enough turbo boost at full throttle. Is your turbo is still making 10psi at full throttle? You may need to install a boost gauge.
-Too much fuel, the injection pump may have been tuned to make more power when it was rebuilt.

Here's a guide I wrote about tuning the pump for more power (http://www.delica.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?f=100&p=139658).

Bad injectors usually cause smoke all the time, often white smoke at idle.

Because our engines are primitive, it's possible to feed them more fuel than they can use, which leads to overheating and cracked parts. As a general guide, if you're climbing a hill or overtaking, turn off the Overdrive and let the engine rev.
When climbing a hill: if using more accelerator doesn't make you go any faster, lift off the accelerator. The engine only makes so much power, and putting more fuel than it can use is asking for trouble.
Nothing says "poor workmanship" more than wrinkles in the duct tape.

Hi and thank you for our answer,

I asked to the previous owner about the injection pump, I'm waiting for his answer.
