Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

Unhealthy rattling coming from motor

Post by Stella87 »

Hey guys, Ive had a happy healthy delica until my last trip wheeling. Got stuck in an epic mud puddle that i managed to barely sneak out of after ramming back and forth for about 20 minutes :? :? :? Since then ive had a pretty serious oil leak coming from the rear main seal. Delica is leaving its mark all over town :-( :M Oddly enough it was just the leak until a couple days ago I tried a bottle of BlueDevil Rear Main Sealer. Since adding that the leak seems to have worsened and that stuff smells terrible in the exhaust, plus (the reason im writing this post..) there is a no good sound coming from the bottom end of the motor. its not valves and no other leak aside from RMS. Any ideas? Ill try to capture some audio of it and post it on here. TIA

Unhealthy rattling coming from motor

A loud rattle from the bottom end, combined with a gusher of a rear main leak, suggests main bearing failure. Did any mud or water get past the air filter and into the intake manifold? If water gets into a diesel engine it can bend a conrod or destroy a bearing (or both!)

...though I've been told I immediately jump to the worst scenario. I would check the compression as a first diagnostic step. If one cylinder is significantly lower than the others, that's your culprit. (http://www.delica.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?f=6&t=18393)

Change the oil, and look for any sparkly metal particles. If the rattle is coming from a failed bearing it'll look like a unicorn threw up in there.
Nothing says "poor workmanship" more than wrinkles in the duct tape.

If the noise is what can be decribed as a 'semi-rhythmic clatter' or 'slapping', check your crank pulley bolt.

The are known to come loose, and the big washer on the bolt causes the noise.

My GF was using our L300 as a daily and on her birthday last year the van died so to speak - well, the crank pulley literally fell off!!
Thankfully no damage done internally besides a smashed rocker arm, have me the opportunity to do some good work on the engine however!
