Rear Lights and Dash quit.

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

Rear Lights and Dash quit.

Post by mbergerooo »

Hi,
I have had my L300 for 2.5 years. I have always had to wiggle the Combo switch to get my dash light to turn on. I am thinking that my Combo switch finally gave up? My wipers work. The horn, brake lights, and high beams work. The daytime running lights work. The rear lights and dash do not. I also noticed that if I leave my lights on after turning the engine off. The terrible reminder to turn off sound doesn't happen. Can anybody tell me if it really is the Combo switch? I also checked my fuses and the battery bay looks fine.
Thanks,
m

Dash, rear lights, and presumably front park lights? Check the fuses first.

If you have the spotlight switch on the dashboard, see if that turns on the rear and dashboard lights (it should). That'll let you know they still work, in which case it's almost certainly the combo switch.

But yes, most likely the combo switch if you've been having trouble with it. Check out Falco's post in the Technical Reference Library (http://www.delica.ca/forum/viewtopic.php?f=98&t=11284), if you're lucky it's just a bad contact. There's a little white plastic lever int here that can sometimes snap, but that leaves you without any main headlamps as well.

Hi Growlerbearnz,
I read that tutorial and took a shot at it but it did not work. My fuse is good assuming I am looking at the right one. I don't have spotlights but I doubt all my lights burnt out at the same time. Is there anything else I can try before forking over big bucks for a new combo switch?
Thanks,

Ok! So a friend helped me out and found that despite my cleaning. They were not clean enough. We sanded the contact points a bit with sandpaper and it all works again! Well my signal lights are not working yet but I will go back into that side now and do the same. m

Also I took the spring loaded parts of the switch apart and pulled the springs a bit. Making everything push a bit harder against one another. It seems to me that these sliders want to take a break after 25 years. So I just tried to bend things a bit this way and that to get an even contact in there.

Great news! Yeah, the combo switch is a weak spot, but 25 years isn't terrible. Especially if it's repairable with a good cleaning!

I think my flasher relay has quit. My signal lights still don't work after a good cleaning in the combo switch. But my hazards still work. Does anybody know if I am on the right trail? My fuses are ok.

Yup. Flasher relay connections? I wiggled all the wires and boxes behind the glove box and everything works now.

Sounds like your wiring connectors might have corroded a bit. Is the inside of your van damp? Might be time to invest in a spray can of Deoxit and keep it in the glove box. Cleaning connectors is often as easy as unplugging them, giving them a squirt of Deoxit, and plugging them back in a couple of times.

I would check the connections in the battery compartment- they're the first to oxidise, and they cause the most trouble when they do. A bit of preventative maintenance there might save you a lot of hassle.

Not exactly related but I've got to add this in: I have a very personal relationship with my wagon. So much so that my front right running lamp is fidgetty. I have a remote start on board the Miss Lil' Bitchi and when I've started my wagon from my flat, the running lamps systematically flash on and off until I put the key in and physically engage the ignition. When I arrived at my Delica, I saw the running lamps flashing, with the exception of the front right lamp. This puzzled me at first because I had only just replaced that bulb so I tapped the lens of the lamp with my finger and on went the lamp. I think she just needs a little reassurance from time to time, like us all.
