Stereo Head Unit Replacement and Electronics Update

Post by feetforbrains »

Alright,

My 1991 L300 is on the truck and headed to my house. In all the time it's taken me to get it here I've had plenty of time to think about how I'm going to deal with the 90's era electronics package that will come with it. This is a placeholder post for the implacable work which will occur very shortly.

Plans:

Step 1: Remove all the stuff that's in the van now.

So there you have it. Looks like a single DIN aftermarket head unit (JDM reception only), a CD changer and something that looks suspiciously like a UHF television. If there is an amplifier it's likely going to come out, too. While taking everything out I'll try and save any wiring harnesses left in the vehicle and map the wires to their source. I've got my power probe and my 9v battery and alligator clips ready. Feels like I'm living back in the 90s.

Step 2: Install Sony XAV-AX100 Double DIN head

Currently, I am imagining hardwiring this beast into the van. Let's hope it doesn't come to that, but I can make it happen if required. I have not been able to locate anything resembling a wiring harness for the van which suggests the hardwire course of action. I will likely also test speaker phase as well as quality as I go through this. Suppose I should start looking for aftermarket speaker install breakdowns.

Step 3: Install the Backup Camera

This is one feature I really love on my current vehicle and they're cheap as hell. It may require a wiring extension.

Step 4: Install Dash Camera and Parking Mode Cable.

People like to touch unusual vehicles in my experience. I don't plan on keeping this a show queen of a van, but I do intend to protect my investment.

Parts List:
Garmin 010-12530-03 Parking Mode Cable
Sony XAV-AX100 6.4" Car Play/Android Auto Media Receiver with Bluetooth
Anker Dashboard Cell Phone Mount
Garmin Dash Cam 55
SanDisk Ultra 64GB microSDXC
VEIPAO 8 Infrared Night Vision Car Rear Camera
MicroBypass Parking Brake Override Bypass for Sony
OEMTOOLS 25886 6-24V Circuit Tester
COCODE Natural Boar Hair Detail Brush (Set of 6)
Pro'sKit 900-015 Helping Hands Soldering Aid
IRWIN VISE-GRIP 2078300 Self-Adjusting Wire Stripper, 8"
SOLOOP 480PCS Electrical Connectors
KIPTOP 13 Pcs Auto Trim Removal Tool and Clip Pliers & Fastener Remover

Welcome to the fun! Alright, just finished the survey of the head unit area. I have ACC constant power in the wiring harness and that is it. To make matters more interesting there is a crap ton of ancient components wired into the confused stock harness and someone pulled tabs and wires from the back of the harness.

Now, this appears to be something aftermarket-esq because of the manner in which it was wired in (two piggyback clips and a bootstrap with electrical tape). I think I'm going to yank it unless you all suggest otherwise.

Stereo Head Unit Replacement and Electronics Update

Post by ACKO15 »

Hi there,

Not sure if you're too far into your project yet, but I installed a similar stereo in my van. Using a diagram online (somewhere), I cut off the stock plug on the new deck and spliced in the old plug from the existing deck. Every function worked perfectly, and now I have a stereo that looks oduly fancy against the quarter century old plastic :-D

Just a suggestion to save some hassle

Thanks ACKO15,

The loom on the vehicle side is a mess. There was a crap-ton of aftermarket Japanese dohickery installed so I've got to sort that out before I get that deck installed and working.

The good news is that I'll probably need to pull the dash to sort it all out. I'm thinking I might flock it while it's out. Make that quarter century old plastic, well, not shine, but you know.

If you've got pictures of your install I'd love to see them.

Unfortunately I don't have photos of the job, and I'm going to leave the dash intact for the time being. Here is a photo from the UK Delica forum which shows the wires in the loom. I can't find the document I used off hand, but if it turns up I'll post it. Solder and shrink tube, and about 45 minutes of my time and I had a functioning double DIN stereo deck.

Ha! That's the one I was using. Looks like my harness is reversed. That and I've apparently disconnected a ground when I pulled the old junk out of there. Time to break out the 9v and alligator clips.

Got it in today and working for about five minutes. Apparently, there is a fault in the IGN circuit or ground which I've missed. Could be further up the harness from the stereo connection. Ugh!
