Replacement Belts Question

Post by Crankshaft Culture »

I bought replacement belts for my '89 L300. This includes both alternator, power steering, and A/C belts. I got Gates brand (part numbers were obtained here: www.delica.ca/forum/download/file.php?id=9411).

However, I noticed the belts that are currently on my 4D56 are not notched; they're flat. The Gates belts I got are notched V belts.

Will these work or am I missing something?

The belts work but my experience is the alternator belts only last 10 to 20 kkm. The others are fine.

Replacement Belts Question

So I double-checked my belts and it turns out I likely do have the correct ones. I didn't realize they're all V-belts, and that is what I have, although the Gates V belts are ribbed or cogged or whatever you call it when there are little valleys instead of being smooth.

I had squeaky belts even after fitting new ones, and investigated:

TL;DR: Un-ribbed belts can wear a groove in the pulleys, which can interfere with the taller Gates style belt. Your new belts should work fine, but if they start squealing check them for abnormal wear patterns.
Nothing says "poor workmanship" more than wrinkles in the duct tape.
