Hey everyone!

I figure before the wisconsin winter decides to make working outside unbearable, I'd do a oil change quick.

I bought two manuals off of ebay, but none of them seem to spec out a specific type of oil.... :-(

From wondering through the interwebs and forum posts, I've heard that these older diesel engines require high sulfated ash content. These meet the JASO DH1 or GLOBAL DHD1 standard? The newer oils seem to not have contents over 1.0%. I might be looking into this too deeply....

I've also seen a wide variety of different weights on posts. 10W-40, 15w-40, 5w-40?

Any information would be fantastic. What have you been using? How much? Techniques for oil changes?

Thanks again!

Hey, I use Delo (Chevron) 15W40. The Deli takes 6.5 Quarts. The filter is available from most places..I buy Wix #51067 from Oreilly's.

I use cheap disposable deep broiling pans because it's larger and easier to see what comes out. Let the engine run for a little bit so the oil heats up a bit. Un-bolt the drain plug, THEN take the oil fill cap off the valve cover. After some of the oil has run out I un-screw the filter. I went through three different oil wrenches until I found the right one for the Deli. It's kind of a metal claw with an adjustable jaw. Worked lie a charm, but mine was on TIGHT!. It'll be heavy (full of oil) so it's more of a controlled drop into the collecting pan. Wipe the oil filter area with a clean rag and put a thin coating of the fresh oil on the rubber seal of the filter. I was able to do everything without using jack stands, and i'm 6'3" 240lbs (meaning i'm not small and i fit under the un-lifted Deli. I just changed mine and put some Seafoam in the crank-case a week before I changed it. That will bring out some sludge and crap that have built up. Mine is running very happily afterwards. :-D

Good Luck...

I use "LiquiMoly" or "Total 9000 Quartz" 5W40 full synth, plus an additive -Image- which is made from graphene. I put six and an half litres into my system, which would be considerably more than six point five American quarts (one American gallon = 3.78 litres). It's 0.9464 litres to an American quart, six and an half of those (6.14 litres) and you'd be short 360 millilitres (twelve ounces?).

Here is a vid demonstrating changing the brake pads and oil change, amongst other things: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABVct94eXxY

What is the manufacturer recommended oil. I recently acquired a 1992 l300 diesel Delica. What oil should I run? And what fuel filter?
