I had a Northstar with head gasket problems before I got the Delica. I looked for weeks into doing the job myself, and while looking, all the forum specialists, and believe me they knew what they were talking about, said to stay away from any kind if magic solution for such a big job. I even found pics of open engines that showed where that snake oil ended up.
I will, however, go check the ceramic website for the info.

I never had the Northstar but when I was doing the research for my friend it
came up over and over. Sounds like a motor I would love to never have :)
Really prone to the cracked head etc issues. And a fortune to fix.

It was the open block design. If fixed properly (check out Northstar Performance, in Manitoba) that thing will outlast the car by years. It had 300 HP almost 1:1 for cubic inches. I loved the car. But indeed, expensive to fix.

I love the sound of a $200 fix, but experimenting on my daily driver makes me very nervous. Also, how hard is it to remove the thermostat on an L300?

On a side note, I just found a bit of oil in the coolant.

Bummer. But at least you know for sure. Good luck with the fix!

Just a reminder. This isn't something I just read up on and thought cool.
It's something we did to the crappy 2L-TE motor in the Surf. It's the one
your supposed to avoid like the plague. If it were a zombie world outside,
this would be the only vehicle you could find with keys in it , while
being chased by those 'Running Zombies' You would be better off
running.

It fixed a majorly crapped out engine. And that was a long time ago.
And my friend still hasn't learned to not overdo it.

We still have another dose since they give ample of the stuff.
And when my buddy blows it up again. We will do it again. That's how
we feel about this stuff.

To get at the thermostat (I was reading up the other day) it is a bit
of a pain since the location is at the lower hose.

http://www.delica.ca/forum/thermostat-i ... tml#p34220

1. Drain coolant off rad and engine block. 14mm nut located on exhaust side of block.
2. Remove driver seat and engine cover.
3. Remove power steering pump.
4. Remove lower rad hose connected to thermostat hsg.
5. Remove and install thermostat.

The power steering pump only has to be undone and moved out of the way
You don't have to remove any hoses.

So do above. Put it back together (leaving the bash plates off) and
I would leave the seat off. Fill it with water, drain water, fill again.
Add the stuff and follow directions.

It will take you an afternoon. It's not as bad as removing the alternator.
Maybe another deliowner could give you a hand if there is anyone in the
vicinity and a 6pack of beer.

Another way of looking at it is that you can get through the winter feeling
out your options till spring and spend the money for a big fix then.
Or decide you feel comfortable with the current.

I included a pic of the leftover stuff I have to show you Im not feeding
you a bunch of bull (that we did it)

I don't doubt your results at all. I spoke with my cousin about it (I'm trying to find out about others' experiences as well). He says he's seen this used and used it himself on many vehicles. He told me the fix could last anywhere from weeks to years. Also, if you try using it again, it will keep building up layers and each time it fails will be worse. I really don't want to have to deal with this again, or have it come up at an in-opportune time. That thermostat removal doesn't sound too difficult, but I'm not sure when I'll have time for that even.

Sorry to hear that a cracked head is confirmed Nxski. :-(

Firesong stop the 2LTE racism! :o My 2LTE's have been problem free for 9 years. They just got a bad rap because Hilux Surfs along with Landcruisers and Townace vans were among the first mass imported jap vehicles when the craze started in 03-04 and greedy dealers were brining in whatever they could find (ie many pre-cracked for your convienience) and selling them to idiots with zero maintanance done on them (or safety compliance for that matter...ah the good old days of not even having to change headlamps). To make matters worse when the head cracks most repair shops just replace the head and not repair what failed in teh cooling system that caused the head to crack...so guess what happens again...new head cracks. Besides the usual suspects in the cooling system tell your friend to refill the silicone in the viscous fan as this is almost always overlooked, most of them have dried up after 15years and you can pretty much stop the rad fan with your finger...ie cooling ability severely comprimised and crackity crack crack on that long highway mountain climb. Also you can use thicker silicone oil for a better bite (stock is ~3000wt, I use 15,000wt). To save $ on that silicone oil buy it at an RC hobby store instead of Toyota.

Totally agreed. :M
Too many junk cars have been brought here.
We have seen too many bad job from many jdm diesel shop due to limitation for customer's own budget or shop's behaviour.

Replacing so many related engine worn parts ( oil pump gear, balancer shaft sleeve/bearing, various gaskets , etc ) along with all timing kit/water pump/thermo, cooling fan, cooling fan clutch, rad hoses, radi, egr blanking, pressure relief valve, etc at the time of engine job will not be much pain to the shop....

Just my opinion.

***That's good info to know. I'll pass it along. In the forums it's one of the ones renown for the problem compared to the other engines. I'll check the fan and see how his is doing. Do you have a part number for an air filter? Pm me. Didn't mean to hi-jack the thread.

Well, looks like i might spring for an engine overhaul. I can't afford a new engine or a rebuilt one, but an overhaul would give me peace of mind and seems to make sense given that it will be mostly taken apart anyways.

$3000 later and I have a new head. The van is running nice and smooth, and starting very easily, but it seems like it has less power than before. It's difficult to go faster than 80kph.

Are you sure you got the right head? When I had my head replaced the first time, assinaboine put the wrong head on (recessed vs flush valves). Ran fine, but low power. It eventually destroyed the engine - the shop eventually replaced the whole engine at their expense. Who did the work?

CVI did the work, but I think it's just a matter of breaking it in. Today it had a lot more power and I was able to drive it around 110kph. If it destroys the engine, I can get the replacement I couldn't afford in the beginning. :-D

CVI wouldn't put the wrong head on, not to worry. Even if it doesn't feel that different than it used to, enjoy the piece of mind.
