Cold squeak

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

Cold squeak

Post by Paule »

I did a search and couldn't find anything that I felt accurately reflected my situation, possibly because I don't know what my situation is....

My 97 L300 has developed a squeak when it's cold - the engine, that is.

It started around the end of October when the van first saw temps below zero. Its a pulsing squeak that matches the speed of the engine, but I can't make myself believe that it is a belt issue, I had them checked shortly after I first noticed it - solved the occasional classic squeal but not the less obvious (at the time) squeak.
I'm paranoid that its a bearing or pulley... The good news(?!) is that it goes away once the engine is warm. What's up with that?!

I've recorded the sound, and if anyone wants to hear it I'll try to get it into a post...

Any insight would be great!

Cheers,

Paul

I'd guess it's a slipping belt...

Mine squeaks, i try not to worry, it could be the ac idler bearing, if it changes when ac is turned on its maybe that. My bearing was pretty dry and floppy so i pressed in a new one

Check your alternator belt too, that was causing mine to squeek and chirp. I tigtened that up a bit and that worked.

Thanks guys, I'll check the belts again...

Any thoughts on why it goes away when it warms up? I've feel like that's not a symptom of slipping belt...

When my alternator belt was loose it only squeaked when cold.

Have seen a few Delica's with worn engine mounts that eventually get a "squeak" sound due to the relatively shallow amount of rubber between the metal supports making contact. Had this happen on my last L300....annoying.
