Loss of power.

Hi,
a couple of times in the last week I have started to depress the accelerater and have had a limited amount of power associated with black smoke and a rattling/ticking/knocking?. Does anyone have any idea what this might be? It works it self out after about 10 seconds. One time it was on the downhill, once on a uphill-both times from a stop and lightly loaded. It feels to me like a lack of fuel problem or may be a turbo issue? Also does anyone have a suggestion for a mechanic in Vancouver-I just moved here from the Island.

are you putting in a fuel additive to lubricate your injection pump? and I bet you arent using a biocide to clear the bacteria that grows in diesel fuel. you only have to put in your biocide once a month for it to work, but if you've been driving for several months or even just a few WITHOUT using a lubricant you could be having injection pump issues. The black smoke is normally just your egr valve , you can take it off and clean it with some solvent, Replace it, or put in a blanking plate and plug the vacuum line.

I have had the Delica for over a year but did not drive that much on the Island(bacteria growth?). I was putting the lubricant in to the fuel but my wife has been doing most of the driving lately so I think that maybe we slacked off. Thanks again.

hi, diesel fuel with some moisture (condinsation) creates a type of bacteria that will line your tank, fuel lines, injection pump, injector nozzles. its a thin film that forms any time your tank is not 100% full and is left overnight to have some condinsation form, A serious issue here on the wet coast .
Everyone has it and its even in the storage tanks at your local fuel depot. nothing you can do to stop getting it, BUT you can kill it and keep it gone with just one ounce of biocide each month, that will strip it all off and flush it though the system.
Yes for the few reading this that are saying ( oh he must sell it thats why he says that) I do sell it. but I sell it because we need it.
I'v been a profesional truck driver for over 15 years now and have seen MANY trucks in the shop getting new fuel tanks and the injection pumps replaced and rebuild because people ignored treating this little problem.
3 point motors sold my father a "smart car" and the sales guy told him dont put in any aditives. well that was just over 2 years ago, and his cars fuel tank and entire injection system was just replaced due to Diesel Bacteria growth.
Now they say, "oops" and the car has a new fuel system (yes they paid) and paid for the towing from Port Albernie to Vic....

even if you dont get it from me, GET SOME one bottle will last you OVER a year.

It sounds like to me that it might be a good idea to clean your fuel system and clean your EGR valve before going through with blanking out the valve. Is that a fair assessment of what you are saying and has been said else where? I also thought I saw a post about the EGR valve cable can be seized up and tat can cause issues. Am I making that up or did I see a post about that?

I am definitely having a smoking issue and I think I have a reduction of power, so i am trying to figure out the best approach to fix it.

Having worked with and around diesel engines for the last ten years or so, I have to echo enviro's advice. Take the time to treat your fuel. Your wallet will love you for it.

Does anyone know where to buy Biocide in the Vancouver area? I went to canadian tire and they didn't have any, went to trusty Lordco and they had never heard of it either. Any ideas?

Hi, well depending on where you live, i could send some over to you on harbor air to richmond or downtown, or on the bus to where ever. why dont you get a group of you together, if you cant take 9 others on board with you , I can give you a better price .
and keep in mind, one bottle lasts for 16 months, you only add one ounce a month.

if your looking for biocide in the valley b&d in abbotsford sells it ,its raight off the freeway clearbrook exit youll see fraser vally injector and b&d painted on the same wall once off the freeway just go sraight to the lights turn left then left again. they also sell really good fuel lubs and they know alot about Diesel engines.

Any marine supply place will have biocide - boats have diesel engines, and have a lot more water to deal with than our Delicas. I bought a bottle of suitable glop at West Marine (by Granville Island) this afternoon.

I got some dbf 4 from Napa. It says it prevents bacterial growth as well as fuel conditioning. Thanks for the heads up on this!
