transfer case gasket and oil

Does your Mitsubishi L300 make a strange noise? Need wheel alignment specs?

transfer case gasket and oil

Post by gondaff »

just wondering if anyone has replaced this one. my cover has recently taken some, how do you say it, unintentional knocks. if anyone has come up with a good skid plate, i am definitely interested in the results. but back to the problem, did you find the right gasket or did you just make your own? also, has anyone had their engine overheat on long slow hill climbs. i am thinking it might be either the electric fan upfront has stopped working or the radiator is plugged. would love any possible thoughts. there will be photos of the road trip soon, but i will say, man, BC is a huge province.

My Delica's temp is confusing to me. I live in Hope and hate going west,(Traffic). So I'm pretty much always climbing to the Coq or Allison Pass summit. and the hottest it's gotten is Halfway on the guage. What I don't like, is how low it drops going down hill. On flats or around town it runs just below the half way mark, which seems to be hotter than most people here. most people seem to run just around the "C".It would be nice to know, What is it suppose to do? Is a fluctuating temperature normal. My other cars all got to operating temp and stayed there, no matter what. I'd like to avoid a rebuild...

Not sure of the transfer case part's, but I do have ideas for skid plating. I hope to get to that stage next month.

As for the temperature, my needle is generally 1/3 of the way up. On long climbs through Roger's Pass and Banff in the 30+ degree heat I would have the needle up to 2/3 or a little more. It comes down quite quickly though. If I actually installed the pyrometer on my bench I would have a much better idea of what is really going on. Mine will also blow out a bit of coolant from the overflow behind the passnger wheel well after I fill it to the full level. It seems to find its own level and stays there. I'm not saying any of this is normal, but in the 45,000 km I've put on since last August, it hasn't let me down.

mine as well heats up too about 3/8 climbing and 1/4 in traffic and around 1/8 to 3/16 on the flat highway , a cooler engine is a happier engine, high heat is always a little scary , and could be damaging, my fan stays on most always as fare as i can tell ,i would maybe flush out the old fluids and put in the recomended coolant yellow cap @ lordco for aluminum rads, (cant remember the name) and do the proper mix ,this is the cheaper start to the trubble shooting ,wich im a big believer in.Also see how hot it gets @ idle the fan should kick in automaticly when its getting too hot or it will be on as soon as you start like mine(dont for get too tromp on the peddle a little and blast the carbine out once in awhile) while your waiting. anyways thats my two bits good luck.
I am stable in most situations that I have no reservations in stormy conditions.

Regarding temperature fluctuations..

I have always found on the many vehicles I have owned that if the temperature needle is fluctuating up and down all the time, my thermostat is NOT working properly. It should come up to temperature and then stay in the range that the thermostat is set for for the rest of the day. As the fluid gets hotter, it opens more to let more fluid through to help it cool better, and as it gets too cool, it closes up a bit to warm it up to the proper range. So, first thing to do is change the thermostat - a cheap and easy job (usually).
Good Luck

ok, here is what i've got so far. the differential case had just taken a hard enough knock to break the seal on the gasket. fixed with the hard forming form a gasket goop. as for the cooling i don't think the electric fan in front of the radiator is ever coming on. will do some electrical trouble shooting and hope that it is easy to find.

I've noticed that I have two fans, one in front and one in back. Is the one on the front for the AC ?, this one i have not noticed turning. The one in the back comes on when i start up and runs all the time as far as I can tell. Should the front one come on as well for cooling, or is it just for the air conditioner?

The one behind the rads is mechanically driven, so should run all the time. However it is clutched to prevent it from spinning too fast. If you hear it making an unusual level of noise (and what is that, you ask?), then the clutch is probably giving out.

The front fan is electrically driven, but I'm not sure what triggers it. Perhaps coolant temperature, or perhaps A/
C coming on? I don't know that one.

Sorry I can't help more

I would assume the second one comes on when using the A/C because it is attached to the A/C rad. So it doesn't really matter, its a secondary luxury. I am converting my A/C into an onboard air system to air my tires up and down when wheeling.

Interesting Idea Josh,

Keep me posted as my AC don't work and was thinking of just striping the whole works.
