I'm not sure, but I think the problem may be that you did not realise the clutch is on the same line. Did you?
It seems though, if you had been as busy as you mentioned, that you would have known this.
So the brake fluid fill-up point is the same one used to fill-up the clutch lines.
If you do anything to the brakes, it can affect the clutch system, the brakes and clutch operation on a single system.

If that was the problem, then it seems the garage guys would have known this but may have played on your lack of knowledge in order to charge you a lot of money for doing things to your van that did not need doing at all. Because if there were no leaks in the system, none found, then how could it have anything to do with the brake lines?

I doubt it very much that the brake hose/pipe lines had anything to do with it, I expect they bled the clutch cylinder and it was fixed. Less than 10 minutes of work.

I am reviving this post because I do have the exact same problem. Spongy brake pedal and weak brakes when car's running, but hard when not running (or the same thing - hard pedal brake- when I clamp the vacuum booster line while running). I changed the master cylinder with a another used (but working) one. Master has been bench bleeded first and installed with the oil tank attached to it. We bleeded the midway proportionning valve, checked and bleeded all brake cylinders.

Everything should be working, but it is not.

Brake is supposed to be a close system. I don't get it.

Any clue? Could it be related to the vacuum brake booster?

I can't see what is the relation between this problem and changing all brake hoses and tubings...

So you say yhe pedal is hard not running then likely your bleed is ok. If you push on the pedal and fire up the vehicle does your pedal sink a small amount or go right to the floor?

I've noticed this problem come up a few times now. Apparently the flexi hoses deteriorate on the inside where it isn't even obvious and cause these symptoms. Have a look at this post from the UK site for instance:

The vehicles are at least 15 yrs old. Expect to change out the entire brake system except the metal brake lines, even the master cylinder. Change the front brakes to a double piston front disc brake. I'd also adjust the proportioning valve to add a bit more braking on the rear wheels to avoid warping the front rotors, again(?). Usually front warped rotors are the reason we have to do brake work. Delicas are very front heavy 4x4s.

Purging is easy if you follow the correct wheel purge rotation and have someone help you. See Jfarsangs instructions earlier. Purge air with the hose/bottle above the bleed screw. Air flows up and can't reenter the system. If the hose hangs down air can flow back into the braking system when you close offf the bleed screw.

JohnT: My van was an auto. unless i'm very much mistaken, there was nothing else apart of the brake system.

OT. I'd get the lines replaced as they have probably never been done, I think I caused my problem after twisting the lines a bit while changing rotors up front.

Flexi hoses can often delaminate inside without ever looking bad on the outside, I've had it happen before too.

Replaced the front inner and outer brake hoses on Saturday and bled brakes from back to front which was first for me on any vehicle. You can find the brake hose parts numbers on other posts here but they are the ~1989 Mitsubishi Montero parts at lordco. $20/$30 for outer/inner hose per side currently.

Tip: on my 91 L300 Chamonix you only bleed from back on one side as a metal housing runs across axle with only a bleed screw on driver's side.

Tip: my front and back bleed screws are different diameters so if you can purchase a couple different sizes of clear tubing it will help get less messier.

Tip: I only needed 500ml of DOT4 and I made sure to get all old fluid (from Japan I would guess) out

If you're not seeing black when you bleed fluid the hoses are not deteriorated inside.
I replaced my hoses and felt no difference, finally replaced the master cylinder and solved all the brake problems.

You can go to a few Canadian Delica suppliers who will likely ship, even to Sardinia, but wouldn't it be easier to go to a local Mitsubishi Dealership and order from them? Seeing that unlike Canada ~ European Mitsubishi Dealerships actually sold Delica Starwagons, so ought to have the parts, no? Also, are there not general auto parts suppliers in Sardinia?

In Italy this vehicle was not imported officially. My L300 comes from Germany, probably my L300 is the only one in Sardinia ..
Original parts are extremely expensive, some aftermarket parts in Italy are not ..
I found on germanian ebay a master cylinder a few euro, tomorrow after the installation of new pipes will decide what to do ..
