LSD - opinions please

I've learned there are 2 styles(maybe not on the mitsubishi side of things) of LSD's. there is the cluth plate style and the ball style. I've been told the ball style sucks. So, i'm pondering if the stock LSD from a montero/pajero/delica etc. is any good?

I currently have open/open diffs. a locker is way more than what I need(pricey too) since I don't 4x4 hard at all. mainly FSR's with a little interesting stuff here and there to get to those elusive camping spots and fishing holes.

should I try to find a cheap one?

I have LSD, man ~ on my Chamonix. I really dig my LSD as it allows me to get in & out of sticky situations. I don't have a lot of driving experiences with LSD to compare with but I like that all my wheels turn, except when turning on hard mud when I'm in 4WD. Limited Slip Differential is good, I think Low Sulphur Diesel is that brown stuff that Spearo was mentioning... :?

I knew a few ppl would chime in on the LSD from the past...I'm too young to know about that.

So far sounds like getting limited slip is a worthwhile endeavour. I'll see what else other ppl have to say too.

Son, we are pretty predictable, here at Delica Canada.

Actually, that is something I like about this club. I was serious about what I said, even if there was a wee spin on it. There will be others here that will be able to get more technical for you ~ I just like the fact that when I am in four wheel drive I actually have four wheels turning.

The one in my paj is the clutch type, if you are buying a used one they can wear out and be rather useless so watch out for high mileage ones. You say you don't need a locker but really they aren't that expensive if you get one off of a montero in the states, Jesse has written up quite a bit on that I believe. You can't compare a locker to an LSD in any real off-roading situation, if both wheels on that axle are on the ground an LSD works fine but as soon as you lift a tire they are useless (or almost useless). An LSD needs resistance to both wheels to make it work, some say you can lightly apply your brakes to provide that resistance while a tire is lifted, regardless of what you do it won't compare to a locker. I'm definitely pro-locker, but if you think all you need is an LSD they are definitely better than a regular open diff. LSD diffs need to have the fluid changed more frequently, if that is not done regularily the clutches get dirty and wear out real fast, you also have to either use an LSD diff oil or put in an LSD additive

If you can source a montero with a locker (1994-1998 SR models), then it's just a matter or swapping out the gears.

thanks for the info. looks like I have some searching ahead of me.

if and when I do find what I want, will I need the ring and pinion aswell??? or can I just rip out my spider gears and replace them with the carrier or locker setup??

Ring & pinion is all you keep

since you've got it open I'd suggest replacing the carrier bearings. Not cheap at $100 for both but worth it in the long run.

this will work on L400's as well right? has to be the bigger of the 2 possible rear ends and no LSD to start with if I remember correctly?

It can work and I can confirm that a straight axle swap is out of the question.

You'll need the complete 3rd member housing the locker, the left side (passenger RHD) axle shaft as it's shorter than the open/LSD shaft, compressor, ecu and switch although the later parts you can substitute.

how many km's is too high for an LSD to be useful??

impossible to tell unless you check the wear on the ring and pinion gears.
