Torque Converter Issue

Post by derekdeans »

OK Problem solving time,

Vehicle 1993 Pajero 2.8 diesel 5 door

Symptoms:-

When in AT Normal and the vehicle is under pressure (uphill or acceleration) at about 2800 – 3000 rpm there is a rapid drop and jump in RPM, eg it will drop from 3000 to 2800 and immediately jump back up again continuously until the speed increases or vehicle is no longer under pressure. This can happen at about 30, 80 and 120kph. When driven in AT Hold there is virtually no problem, however in this mode the RPM seems to be high – cruising at about 90kmp the revs are around 4000.

What I have done:

Had the tranny fluid checked, mech said it was OK but I think it is looking brownish with no burnt smell
Had the Kick Down cable played with, no change

I have had a mech suggest that it may be the torque converter be the issue but this was an over the phone diagnosis. The problem I am facing is finding a mech / tranny guy to work on the Vehicle, I have had at least three refuse to look at it. Also I cannot find anyone who has the Japanese software for the diagnostic computer.

Anyone have an ideas, clues or suggestions?

Cheers

Derek

Have had a similar issue in my L400 for a while now. After a bunch of investigations, I'm pretty sure it's the throttle position sensor that needs to be replaced. It's a pretty common issue, and you may need to look around to find one that's not part of the injection pump assembly. I had my kickdown cable adjusted at CVI when I was in Vancouver in the fall and it seemed to help things our for the time being.
