Ham Radio Course 10 January 2009 North Van

Post by TardisDeli »

Hi All,

Ham Radio course starts THIS Saturday 10 January 2008. North Vancouver RCMP station 14th St near Lonsdale (North Shore Emergency Management Office, 147 East 14th Street). For 7 saturdays. $120.00 total. Starts 8:30am. www.ve7nsr.ca

Join us! Several of us Deli Drivers are taking this course. Still spaces. Absolutely no experience needed, they teach from the very basics.

Ham radio is also called Amateur radio, needs a license, you can send/recieve around the world. Actively used (not like CB). If you need help, someone somewhere will hear your call and relay your info, or you can just chat to other delica drivers around the world. Events in BC use ham volunteers for emergency communications.

Cheers, Christine.

Below is excerpt from FalcoColumbarius post named VHF:

The course begins Saturday 10th of January 2009. 7 Saturdays, the seventh is exam. Cost $120.00 (including the book*) from 09hrs to 12:30hrs. For an extra $20 there are afternoon sessions where you can learn how to do other things, like building your own custom aerial. The sessions will take place at the North Vancouver RCMP Detachment, located at the corner of St. Georges Avenue & East 14th Street, NV.

*If you already have the book then $20 off of the price. If you don't have the book then it is $13.76 cheaper if you get it through the course.

It was good. A bit mind twisting but very informative and we now have our radio licenses and can legally install VHF in our vans.

So, now that we are a couple of months on, how many have installed ham radios? I'm asking since I'm heading in the Vanc direction shortly. Would be good to talk. And if so, what repeater? What callsigns?

check with the local ham groups. You can also just get the manual, or download practice exams, or both, then write the test. Fairly easy if you have an electonics background, but not recommended is not.

Most courses teach you how to pass the test, not how to use a radio. (just a bit of a warning)
