35C in the shade, what better time to get ready for winter? I strapped a short shovel onto the passenger side along with some traction matts I found.

I have been thinking about how to boost the truck in the winter with the battery under the seat. I don’t want to screw around with that at -40C. I also can’t give a boost. My solution was to wire a winch connector from the battery to behind the cab by the block heater plug. I can then clip in the other end and connect to regular battery cables. I would like to find “something” to put that connector and the block heater plug in. A box of some kind.....maybe a lid to keep out mud and snow......

I brought Sumo to Western Turbo to install a new timing belt. They did that, checked the valves and the timing. Timing is quite advanced, which is good for me. I've been having trouble starting the truck in the cold so I checked the easiest to reach glow plug. Wow! Nasty looking! Partsouq here I come. Four new and surprisingly longer glow plugs arrived in a week.

It wasn't that hard a job but the electrical connection of course is on the back one deepest in there.......tested my patience and manual dexterity.

Does it start better with the longer glow plugs? (It might not be cold enough to tell yet).

Starting issues continue. Truck starts on the first crank at 5-10C, will not start at -5C. I know the glow plug system is working and it should start at that temperature without glow plugs anyway. I changed the fuel lines and upgraded to real hose clamps so I'm not sucking air. I installed an inline electric fuel pump so I know the IP is getting fuel.

Picture is sideways of course...

Still not starting below zero. I have to check the two valves on top of the IP to see if and when they get power. Maybe they're not opening up?

I had some emulsified water in the fuel this fall that I thought I'd worked out of the system but maybe not. I've been regularly added fuel conditioner and some diesel 911 but I'll drain some today to check.

It's a balmy -15C so a nice temperature to work outside.
