I'm going to document my modifications on the new to me Townace. I hope someone finds it interesting. A couple of specs - 2000 Toyota Townace, 5 speed manual, full time 4x4, 2.2 diesel no turbo, 70,000 kms a former municipal vehicle. Motor is rated at 125 hp so a bit more than the 4d56T of course this may be negated by the lack of a turbo charger.

Here is the starting point. Lots of obvious work to be done right off the hop.

After picking the truck up from Ben at FVI, I drove the 60km to my friends in Burnaby. Using their meager selection of tools we removed the roof lights, canopy and heavy duty brackets. With much less wind resistance I was ready to drive the 2500km to Winnipeg!

Look at that massive rack! It was too high to fit into my garage - that's a problem!

First task - cut down rack to something reasonable. I went just a touch higher then the cab. I did not want to bolt into the towers for the power tailgate so I welded a short section of angle in to solidify the rear corners. No close ups of the welds, they're that bad!

I chose to bolt it on so it would be easy to remove later if needed. My welds probably don't have much penetration, could just pop off....

Feel free to comment or ask questions!

I had about a week to prepare the Townace for the provincial safety so for the first few days I just did stuff I wanted to. I had made an extensive list before picking it up in Vancouver but I played a round a bit before getting serious.

Like a number of others have mentioned about odours from smoking, this truck stank! I spent at least an hour scrubbing the hard surfaces of the interior and the metal parts are white - not a hazy yellow! Pretty gross! I used Febreeze on the seats and while I'm no fan of chemicals it actually works quite well.

There are a couple of burn holes in the seats....what can you do, looks, feels and smells much better!

The arm rest folds up and is in theory a third seat....maybe for a ten year old! Seat belt removed!

Thanks for reading,

Looks like you're making progress! How's the engine? Adequate, or gutless?

My current obsession: Toyota Camp Mate. There's one for sale nearby with a blown engine (so super cheap), but I don't have any more room in the workshop.

Nothing says "poor workmanship" more than wrinkles in the duct tape.

Hi Growler,

The engine has power but the 5 speed column shift, full time 4x4 and low gearing add up to slow acceleration. That being said, the drive from Regina to Winnipeg is 550 kms and I cruised along at 105/110 kph with lots of pedal left. You'll notice the lack of turbo on big hills, I crawled up a couple in 3rd at 50 kph revving high! Of course that was in the Rocky Mountains which are pretty big! I haven't noticed any difference with small 1000-1300 pound loads, we'll see when I get a real load on it. Mileage has been great at 27mpg for the first tank, in town and some highway with lots of short trips and idling. With warmer weather I expect a solid 30 mpg consistently.

That camper van looks so cool!

Some of you may know I am a huge proponent of the Polar Pad block heater. Well I obviously need a block heater on my new truck for our Winnipeg winters. The only caveat to the Polar Pad is it needs a flat space to adhere to. There was only one spot that would work with the smaller 125W version not the 250W one I wanted to install. I would have put it on straight if I could have seen what I was doing!

Of course there is a bunch of stuff in the way but I managed to get it done by feel and using a mirror. It definitely made a difference at -15C, time will tell if it will be adequate at -40C. I do have a magnetic block heater that I could throw on if it gets really cold.

Current obsession - tires. Truck has 175/80R14 load range D, 8 ply WINTER tires. Of course, can't find anything like that in Canada or the US. I have a line on some Yokohama y370 in 195/75R14 which are about 2% larger.

I have had these tires and the y356 tires on minitrucks and they are tough! I'd like to save the narrower winter tires for winter so I'll probably pull the trigger this week. $180 a tire installed.......not terrible, it is the size I need and a great tire that will handle the heavy loads I intend to haul this summer but my poor cheap heart! I'll cheap out and find a used tire for the spare - full time AWD, spare MUST be the same size!

Couple of small updates - here is a picture of the engine bay. I found the EGR valve now I have to find the exhaust side. I want to blank it out but access is going to be a pain. I know you Delica guys are enjoying it. The Strada has tons of room under the hood, no hood here, crawling in under the seat.

Here is the K&n filter I found on Kijiji. Strange but perfect fit! The flange of the filter snugly fits over a metal pipe that protrudes down from the inside of the air filter housing. The length is perfect and the lid presses the air filter down so should be no air sneaking by.

I added a LED work light on the rack facing backwards and while I was at it added a switch with power and ran a wire to the front for my driving lights. Red switch for the back, orange switch for driving lights.

I found these driving lights on amazon.ca and they are outrageously bright. I have to build a push bar (roo bar) for the front, sourcing metal now.

It seems no one sell used steel anymore. Once the snow melts, I'll have to check out my scrap pile at the farm and see if there is anything suitable. I did snag a pair of 6' long 3" diameter schedule 40 pipe last week at the scraper - 12 cents a pound!

I will have to remove the drivers seat and the floor pan under it to do the EGR delete. That is the only way I see of getting to the exhaust side of the pipe. I did disconnect the vacuum line so that the valve is not operating - baby steps!

Truck has been a champ working since I got it home. I'm just at the 5000km mark and getting ready for an oil change.

I haven't had any issues with power and mileage has been steady at 25-27mpg. Not too shabby!

That's 3' high plaster and drywall from a reno - 1150kg - or 2500 pounds for you Luddites. Springs weren't bottomed out!

Hi demiro, thanks for checking it out. this is probably the only Townace in Winnipeg perhaps Manitoba. If any Manitobans feel like a get together, they could check it out.

Truck keeps on working! I have some plywood to make sides that I can put down when empty. Spent a day hauling firewood to my mom's house. About 2500 pounds a load. No complaints!

I'm still "getting ready" for the EGR delete but this is the busy season for hauling so it'll have to wait for July/August. Also in the top 5 - stereo of some sort! 500 km round trip to the cabin is boring! I have an idea for my push bar and I think I have some steel - will have to experiment to see if the idea will work.

I had some down time so did a bit of work on the trucks. I had pressure washed the mud off "Sumo" so decided to do the asphalt undercoating in the wheel wells. The factory applied coating was cracking in spots so trying to stay ahead of the rust. I did get the Yokohama tires and they're great! Load range D, inflate to 65 psi no bulging with a load on.

Also temporarily installed the German flag as it's World Cup.
