About time for an update on my project. IT RUNS!! I sure was pretty fking stoked when she picked up and screamed to live on half a crank. I had those damn belts of half a dozen times redoing this and rechecking that. Pull a broken bolt from the block. Drill, tap and helicoil a new thread. Re time everything. So far just a couple of drips after driving around the driveway. And the power steering seems to be sealing up. We'll see under harder use. Pretty sure the pump is on it's way out. Warms up pretty good. Here's a rundown.
  • Broken and stripped upper silence shaft tensioner 'bolt'.
  • Helicoil repair
  • Pulled the trans pan. Standard aluminum 'fuzz' on the magnets. No chunks.
  • Cleaned the filter, new fluid
  • Full oil change, filter, black as tar... Will probably drop in some sea foam and go for another change well before the next 5k
  • Fuel filter change, prime, etc... (have never done this before, it was fun to learn)
  • Bolted up all the various pulleys and pieces. (wow the allen key in the ring gear worked like a dream).
  • Dropped some Diesel Fuel additive in. Also have some Marine 2stroke to use after this first batch of gunk.
This was a real downer...

So, yay. It runs. It's loud. I will need to get used to that. A bit louder as I have the carpet off the front and there just wans't any in the back. Been scouring the board on sound dampening. So far I like the closed cell foam idea. Considering the expense of the dynamat type stuff, it seems alright. Actually just read about waterproof proofing tape! (http://www.eternabond.com/AlumiBond-p/ho-as.htm) Very similar properties of the dynamat product except it's asphalt based instead of rubber and works great!

Anyway I have a few more q's for anyone watching...

I just saw this under the carriage. It appears to be the Driver Side transmission bracket? And is looking really aged. :) Anyone know of an l300 getting wrecked anywhere? What's the compatibility on these? They look to be at least $130 when I was able to see one similar online.

  • What is the purpose of the Throttle Knob on the dash? How is it used?
  • What are DEPO Headlights? I have E class lights on the Deli so I think I'm good. Although they are really dim...
  • Any magic formulas on the 'Dim Deli Headlight' symptom? :)
Next up is to spray the crap out of everything with some RustCheck.
EGT gauge from Auberins.
EGR Delete.

I'm so frickin nervous to drive this thing without an EGT guage, haha... I've done WAY too much reading...

Cheers, J

awesome thread, I have a question for ya, im pretty new to the delica myself only had it a couple of months. Im wondering about the belt for the A/C. Did my first oil change the other day and discovered why my A/C doesn't work. The belt came off and is shot. How hard is it goingto be to get at the belt and will I be able to put it on without pulling half the front of the motor off?

Hey! Are you actually in Victoria? Is that you parked up at the Mt. Work (McKenzie Bight) lot sometimes? We should get serious on a Deli-Meet.

Anyway, ya, the AC belt is the outter most so you should be able to just back off the tensioner, wrap it around the fan and wrestle it down onto the crank pulley and on to the AC pulley. I still haven't gotten around to the AC part so mine is just 'belt-less'. Also I think the bearing in my tensioner is shot so I've left that off as well. Have some transmission gremlins to iron out.

Cheers!

Those bushes look messed up. I've only been able to source them from Mitsubishi if you buy the whole crossmember, but if I ever figure out a compatible replacement I'll let everyone know. No luck so far.

The throttle knob is to increase your idle speed while the engine is cold. Hold the accelerator until the engine is at the speed you want, pull the knob out until you feel it stop, twist the knob to the right to lock it.

DEPO are a taiwanese manufacturer of replacement headlamps, and they tend to make left- and right-hand traffic versions of headlamps for vehicles which might have originally only been available in left-hand traffic. The E-codes refer to the market the headlamps are certified for- you can have e-code lamps, but if they're for the wrong side of the road they should be replaced. There's a great (long, detailed) description of E-codes here: http://www.danielsternlighting.com/tech ... codes.html

Dim headlamps: try replacing the bulbs. No, serious. Bulbs get yellower with age, and yours might be 25 years old now. Try and resist the urge to fit more powerful bulbs: the projector lens in your headlamps can overheat and crack if you fit bulbs over 55W. I like Philips Xtreme Vision bulbs because they're surprisingly bright, despite the stupid blue tint. High beam = H1 12V 55W, low beam = H3 12V 55W.

Hey, cheers Gbear. That's really great info! Especially the bulbs, appreciate the product recommendation. I'll sort that asap.

Hi. I've been going back-and-forth between many L300 delica options; including looking at some projects or vehicles with issues.

Just wondering if you have any advice or could share some things you look for when choosing a vehicle with "problems" that you intend on fixing up - are there any deal breakers? Rust? Mileage over XXX?

I do enjoy a project, and would like to save $$$ on the initial purchase so I can tear the thing apart and modify the interior, paint it how I like, etc. BUT not at the expense of having a catastrophic failure in a few years.

Anyways ... just trying to wrap my head around it =) Van is looking SWEET

My preference is to avoid anything rusty. Rust is expensive to fix adequately, ridiculously expensive to fix properly, and is usually like an iceberg: you can usually only see 10% of the rust, once you cut that away you'll find the other 90%. The only rust I'd be ok with is on the tailgate or doors- they're easily replaced. Anything in the floor or sills suggests more rust in the chassis and suspension mounts, and you just don't want to go there.

A dodgy engine, however, is easier to fix- a new head, radiator, even a whole donor engine from something else. A dirty interior or dinged-up exterior is also fairly easy to fix.

Hey! Ya, that rust thing is a deal breaker for any project. Like a crappy bike frame, it'll always be heavy. I sort of went in pretty blind when I grabbed my Deli. I have a mechanics background and was hoping the oil soaked front end was rocker cover. It wasn't. haha!

Basically, there's almost a grand of parts into it in the first wave because the previous owner really let her down. Also, another thing that sort of startled me was how much the engine rattles. That can take some getting used to. I plan on checking the fuel timing when I get around to picking up a dial indicator. Just be prepared to constantly tinker. I LOVE my wagon and it's handled very well on hundreds of KM's of logging road.

Cheers.
