Greetings from Portland, Oregon

Postby ntmokey » Sat Mar 26, 2016 1:00 pm

I'm a Delica owner, but not yet a Delica driver ... on account of it currently being 4,800 miles away!

I bought a 1990 P35W Star Wagon from Japan in February, and it's only a few days away from hopping on a ship to Tacoma, Washington, where I'll pick it up and drive it back to Portland, Oregon. You can check out pictures and video from my exporter Derek at Pacific Coast Auto Imports here:
https://goo.gl/photos/MNHTTtd33NJmqpi5A
I had to be patient, but it has all the features I wanted: high roof, Crystal Lite windows, no rust, lowish miles (150K km). It also has some fun perks like a hot/cold box, aftermarket lift, and some nice-looking aftermarket wheels. In case anyone's curious, I paid $4,000 for it at auction and will have paid about $7,500 for it by the time it gets here, between auction fees, shipping fees, import duties, and all that fun stuff. If anyone has any questions about the import process, I'm happy to answer, although my saga is only half over. I documented all my expenses (so far) here:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/ ... nteractive

She's scheduled to depart on a RO/RO ship on Tuesday, and should land in Tacoma on April 10. I'll be watching its progress remotely from this nifty site, which lets me view exactly where the ship is in real time:

Can't wait to get this Delica stateside and into the mountains! Ultimately, the plan is to turn it into a camper. In the meantime, if any Portland Delica owners ever want to meet up for a beer, hit me up!

Clean Van, please, rust proof it :) Will you add the missing usual features : mirrors, Brush Gard/Fog lights, etc ?

Yes! The one disappointment with this van was that it didn't come with the brush guard, which I love the look of. I figured it's a lot easier to add an accessory than remove rust. Not many donor Delicas down this way, so it might be a while until I find one. If anyone in Washington or Oregon reads this and has a brush guard they would part with, though, contact me! If not, I may try to pick one up in Canada.

Any product recommendations for this?

That's very tidy! Must be early 1990 as it has sliding windows in the back- they're much better for camping, the late-'90 facelift glass doesn't let much air in. And switching to right-hand traffic headlamps is going to be super easy :-)

It's difficult to see how they've done the lift, I can't see any obvious spacer blocks at the front or the rear. When it arrives I'd love to see photos of the rear spring shackles and front upper knuckle joints. Because I'm a huge nerd. Apparently.
Something something Dark Side, something something Complete.

Many thanks for the warm welcomes! And especially to Jere for sharing that bullbar on eBay -- I bought it last night and am having a friend from Seattle pick it up! The Delica isn't stateside yet and I'm already buying upgrades...

I'm looking right now at importing from Canada. I would not be shipping but driving up to get it myself. I'm a bit overwhelmed by the import process, do you have any tips? I have read that the fee is 2.5% for cars and 25% for trucks, and I imagine that this van qualifies as a truck. What was the fee like when you imported?

Thanks for any help you can spare!

Isaac

*UPDATE*

I figured it out and now have my 1992 Delica in Chehalis Washington! I'll get photos eventually after I wash it.

Hello ntmokey. I'm in Portland as well. My wife and I are seriously considering importing an early 90's Delica Super Exceed. Congrats on your new Delica! I assume you have it by now. How has it been?

It has been everything I hoped for! Since the weather has been nice, I've had it out pretty much every other weekend for camping. Flawless reliability, decent gas mileage, smiles and thumbs up everywhere I go. All of my friends want one now, too! The woods of the Pacific Northwest are my oyster.

The only caveat I would warn would-be Delica owners of, that I don't think comes up enough, is the power, or lack thereof. These vans are dogs. If you're trying to get anywhere in a hurry, forget about it. That said, I've embraced the right-lane lifestyle and enjoy just getting there when I get there. I mostly take it on trips, so the lack of pep doesn't bother me much.

If you ever want to check out a van in person, let me know! I wish I had seen one before I ordered one from Japan, even if it only would have made me want one more.

Who did you use for the auction? I've had a couple deals fall through now (after traveling and/or planning to travel to BC) and am willing to start looking into the auction option.
Thanks!
