Henrietta's Second Life in the Arctic

Post by alexoehler »

Introducing Henrietta... We purchased Henrietta from Rising Sun Imports in Vancouver where Steven Lee provided us with excellent service. We highly recommend Steven to everyone on this forum for vans, parts, or service (http://www.rs-import.ca). He really went out of his way to make sure our new Delica would be exactly what we wanted. He helped us get Wrangler DuraTrac Tires for a very good deal, various parts for the L400 to take home, and 2 years of full warranty. After the purchase was complete, we drove Henrietta to her new home (Inuvik, Northwest Territories) from where she will be operating from now on. She did great on the 4,000KM trek with over 700KM of gravel road (Dempster highway). Here we will fit her out with 3 block heaters to make her purr at -40C.
A brief stop at the Arctic Circle, before heading on home to Inuvik.

We live right in town. And Henrieta is turning heads alright. It will be a while before people know it's us driving the van, not tourists...

Nice job Alex! We lived in Inuvik for three years (2005-2008) and I remember the first time we saw a Delica on a trip down to Dawson City. I immediately thought that it was the perfect vehicle for Inuvik and the Dempster, but had serious reservations about how they would hold up during the long winters and sourcing spare parts at the end of the road. Now we're living in Vancouver and just picked one up a month ago, L400 as well. Looking forward to putting it through its paces on some forest service roads looking for camping spots and bike trails.

Keep us posted on how your van handles the winters, and what you're doing to get it ready for 7 months of serious winter.

Welcome to the Delica world.

I bought a Delica in 2007 primarily for a trip to Inuvik, which we did in the summer of 2008. Had a blast, and the Delica handled the Dempster very well (trip log is on the forum in the member trips section).

We were amused/annoyed to find that we weren't the first Delica to Inuvik (Whitehorse couple took theirs to Tuk the year before).
