Hi everyone, from Qualicum Beach, BC

Post by Finnegan »

What a great, positive site! I'm hoping that, pursuant to my son conducting a test drive tomorrow, I will be plunking down my deposit on a 94 L400 immediately thereafter. (Can't do the test drive myself - I'm about 100 km north of hell working in AB). My poor wife had her Outlander in the shop for brakes, drove my old Mazda 929 part way to work and promptly wrote it off, along with the deer. Voila! - down payment on Delica.

My mechanic is of the opinion that parts will be hard to find, etc. etc., but browsing through this site, I see a lot of parts for sale and really don't hear much negative feedback on these vans. I first saw one in 2008 when I moved back to the Island, and have wanted one since.

If anyone knows of a reason why I shouldn't make this deal, let him speak now or forever hold his peace. (I might not listen anyway!)

So here's hoping I will be picking up my 'new' Space Gear on March 17th. Cheers.

Welcome to Delica Canada, Finnegan :M

Take a look through "Delica Canada Technical". There's a complete shop manual for the L400 in there.

Hey,
If you are based out of Qualicum Beach on Vancouver Island,
you are very close to Coombs Country Autos.
http://www.ccautos.ca/

I probably would not have considered owning a Delica
if his shop was not close by.They have or can get anything
you might need.

Very Good garage, busy lads though call ahead!

Right ON! 8-)

I lived about a mile behind Coombs last year, and used to drive by that shop every day. I hear that they are the 'goto' shop for these vehicles, so feel pretty secure about service. Thanks for your input.

Mk. IX; B wing. Where function meets form, my favourite mark. Merlin 61; V12; 27litre with two stage supercharger.

Two beautiful and highly functional aircraft from the Second World War: Vicker's Supermarine Spitfire and the Mitsubishi A6M Zero-sen. When driving my Chamonix I am reminded of Mitsubishi's part in aeroplane design when I consider the different radiators and cooling systems that are found in the Third Generation Mitsubishi L300 Delica Starwagon GLX.

My Hunny and I just had some of your tasty scallops for dinner the other night. I think we need to have a meet there sometime, with a potlatch of course ;)~

You will find info, parts and service for your Deli. Let us know your name for it when you decide.

Unfortunately, potential mechanical issues and the fact that my vehicle will be far far away from anyone who knows anything about Delica repair for at least 4 months this summer, means that I'm still shopping.

All vehicles have potential mechanical issues, no? Read a post in Delica Wiki: To Do list on newly acquired Delica. It gives you a good idea of what to look out for. The machines are solid but rubber has a life span and everything in this world is subject to decay, unfortunately.

Falco.

P.S.: Where are you going so far away from civilization?

True enough, all vehicles have issues at some point (just spent nearly $1300 getting the rear brakes done on my '07 Outlander (145,000 km), but I'd rather be sure that the possibility of problems is diminished as much as possible. I'll be either somewhere in AB, or in smalltown MB for about 4 months and will be working daylight hrs, 7 days/week (probably MB). I'd be surprised if anyone in the area where I'll be has ever seen or heard of one of these vehicles, much less worked on one.
If I were going to be primarily on the Island, I wouldn't worry too much about potential problems, because I could get them fixed readily. My last car had 324,000 km on it when my wife smoked the deer with it, so a high-mileage vehicle doesn't concern me.
I'm not at all worried about the idea of owning another 15 year-old vehicle, just want to get one that has had as much preventative maintenance and repairs done as possible, so despite my wife's misgivings, a Delica is still my vehicle of choice. I'm just going to shop for one that has had all the things done to it that this forum suggests be done. My choice would be a white, 94-96 L400, crystal-lite roof, auto, diesel, LWB.
Not asking for much, huh?? (Actually, I'd be good with SWB, any color but rust, mechanically strong, cosmetically so-so, but I really, really like the sunroofs)
Utility is key - camping capability, 4-wheel drive, or loaded with my carpentry tools, or loaded with my musical equipment, gets over 20 mpg, and has its own support group. What vehicle could be better suited? Beats me!

Not sure where in Manitoba you may be working, but I'm near Dauphin, and am very familiar with the Delica's, and I usually have an l400, or l300 to loan out. There is also a shop in Winnipeg that I refer people in that part of the province to. Coombs County Auto, Rising Sun Imports, and Rocky Mountain Imports have all been able to provide me with the necessary parts extremely quickly. Having a Delica in Manitoba should not be an issue at all.
