Importing vs Local Purchase

Post by jamesroodney »

After a few glowing praises about older Delicas I've decided to look into this as a replacement for our current vehicle. What are your thoughts on import vs. local purchase? We're about 4 hrs from Vancouver, so we're close enough to check out the importers there or pick up the one we import ourselves. So... benefits, drawbacks, personal experiences? Also while I'm at it, what's the ICBC rate for a Space Gear? Thanks!

We used Derek Weldon as our vehicle bidder and inspector in Japan. We looked at a few on the auction sites, Derek viewed them with a comment on what he thought about each vehicle and then we selected which one to bid on. We won the bid on a 1997 Delica Space Gear with 54000 kilometers and a grade of 3.5 or better. I don't remember which. It is a gas engine not diesel. Our winning bit was approximately $1000.00. Another $2000.00 to have it inspected, papered, cleaned and shipped to Vancouver. We then used Thompson as our clearing broker. Very easy to do. All parties were very professional.
We have driven it North, South, East and West. It now has just under 100000 kilometers on it. Our mileage is much better than what is said by others, I don't know why. We are always around 8 to 10 liters per 100 kilometers. The engine is used by Chrysler so all tune ups are simple.

That's our story.

Thanks for your reply!
Our winning bit was approximately $1000.00
Wow that seems like a great deal compared to what I'm seeing out there now. I looked up Weldon, thanks for the tip. So the $2000 for importing all went to him or to Thomson too (I couldn't find info on that recommendation)?
