Ontario Insurance

Post by james »

About to buy an L400... Marty from Amazing Auto Imports was wise enough to make sure I had insurance options first. Turns out my broker is only coming up with Facility and I'm afraid the rates will be nuts. Any other Ontario owners with insurance? Also while I'm on the topic, are there any Ontario drivers with advice regarding bringing a BC registered Delica into ON? Any special requirements not already addressed in BC?

Thanks in advance!

I've got a 1984 Dodge B350 with aftermarket 4x4 installed in 1985 by a company still in business. I also live in Ontario. The insurance companies are required to offer insurance to any street legal vehicle, but tend to fall back on facility when they can't find some way to rate the vehicle.

I suggest getting it insured for a short time in BC and then dropping that paperwork in your broker's lap with the caveat that your entire insurance package is riding on the outcome.

I told my broker of 25 years that he had to get it covered by my existing company. He called the underwriter, showed her photos of the installer's certification plate, and all was good. She commented that all the 4x4 option was doing was making it a better work truck. Whatever. The only issue left is that none of the RV type work done to it is covered as that is a whole different kettle of fish.

Some said why tell the company it's 4x4; well they need the risk to assess the price. No surprises if the worst should happen.

Oh, $858 per year. No collision.

Hey James,

I'm in Ontario and seriously looking at importing my first Delica. How did things go for you? What was your insurance in the end and were you happy with Amazing Auto?

I'm in Ottawa - where are you?

Cheers,
John

I'm halfway to you :) Delica in Saskatoon. Insurance here in Saskatchewan is very easy. James
