glow plug cicuit

Post by Delicagibsons »

Can someone please exlain the glow plug circuit to me? It works fine when I turn the key, nice click, wait 10 seconds ..starts great..but then it clicks on and off for some time after. Sometimes three or four clicks in a row about a half second apart then stops and then repeats for quite a while. Is there some kind of "engine warmed up" circuit that might be involved there? I'm new to this vehicle and a bit stumped here..the relay seems to get quite hot...thanks Steve

the relay does have an after-glow function that keeps the plugs running after the engine starts... as for yours cycling quickly... it may have some form of an issue in there... but I'm affraid I don't know enough about the circuitry involved to be much help

I too find the glow cycle quite short (especially when compared to my old Mercedes)

Apparently 6 volt plugs heat up quite a bit faster then 12 volt plugs, hence the shorter cycling time. I think mine takes about four seconds.

The 12 volt system on newer versions of this same engine do supply voltage to the plugs after the engine has started.

If you have a digital multimeter [ less than $20 at Cambodian tire].
you can check the voltage to the plugs whilst you start and warm up your [cold] engine.

good luck,

let us know what you find

Glow Plug circuit

Post by MardyDelica »

Hi, Guys, its normal for this Mitsubishi delica engine. this engine dont like cold weather. i test many delica & pajero & do same thing. this is just a bad design By mitsubishi for the glow plug system. you just have to deal with it. just give gas a little bit when the relay start clecking on & off & wait until 10-15 second until it lock. the glow plug relay will cut off the power in the relay. then you could release the pedal for normal idling.
most important you have a click sound when you start this delica. & dont leave this clicking sound on all the time when you are warming up the engine. it will soon destroy your glow plug relay. hope this will help you guys. cheers :)

glow plug relay

Post by Delicagibsons »

When I start it, it just clicks once and that's it. AFTER it starts, then it starts clicking. It keeps on clicking even after I start driving..sometimes for 5 -10 minutes on and off evry few minutes...anoying. I tried reving the engine up a bit and it still does it. It's not like a fast click, sometimes a couple of times a second, then 3 or 4 seconds apart then a gap then again...it's like something is shorting or something......click......3 seconds....click click, click....5 seconds...click...click click......it seems to stop after the truck is warm but still throws the odd click in there even 15 minutes after I've been driving....Odd...

Glow plug circuit

Post by MardyDelica »

HI, I see your problem. in your case the best way is change the 2 glow plug relay that is located under your driver seat. there is 2 relay shape is like a round with 2 outlet & a center plug & screw on it. maybe worn-out since it has a magnet inside this relay.old relay or antifreeze sensor located on top of the cylinder head beside the first injector. but first try the relay. it might work for you. if you need help for relay i can get you one from japan. cost maybe 100-110 each. hope this help.

glow plug

Post by Delicagibsons »

That doesn't make sense. Why would the relay fire at all when the engine is warm? The only reason would be if it's triggered on the control side by some sort of hot (power) connection. It works fine on a cold start, it's not worn out, Something keeps triggering it to close. I'm sure it's not a worn out relay.....I'm going to look at the schematic and see how the circuit works then see if I can trace why it's closing before I spend any money on replacing it...thanks. glow plug

Post by Delicagibsons »

Hmmm...what does the antifreeze sensor do? That makes more sense that it's causing the glow relay to close if it's faulty or shorting out...I'll look there first..thanks for the tip.. Steve

Hi, I do understand what you mean but the glow plug relay only works the engine is cold.like i say before this is bad design by mitsubishi. reason i tell you this is that i encounter this problem before. then i change it & it works for me. just sharing my experience on this relay. you can do your research if you like why not. its a learning experience.Cheers

Hi, about the antifeezed glow plug sensor. this sensor is part of the glow plug system. it sense if the antifreezed is warm or not then sent the info toward the ecu for glow plug system. there is connection.sometime this sensor is no good 15 years old. in japan mostly people dont change antifreezed its expensive for the labor. i talk to my mechanic & we share info & if you check the oHM capacity of this sensor then you will not know if sensor is good or not. we have the book for this delica engine thats why we know & can fix any trouble shooting for this mitsubishi engine.just so many things going on to fix this glow system. thats the only bad part for this delica the rest is good

Like Mardy says this system is quite sensitive. Any high resistance in the cicuitry is bound to give greif.

The relay contacts can burn if they are not clean and any minute amount of corrosion in the connections and wiring may cause the controller to behave abnormally.

If you change your coolant make sure you get ALL the air out of the system.I don't think the temp sensor probe is located where you might get an air pocket, but there is an air bleed screw on the thermostat housing.

Hi Steve,

I will try and help where I can, but first, maybe follow the advice of Argo (i.e. clean up all contacts where you can?)

There are actually 3 different types of glow plug control system on L300's! :?

Maybe best if we establish which one you have before I go firing too much data at you.....

There are two common types: Auto Glow System and Super Quick Glow System (We'll ignore the Self-Regulating Glow System for now!)

Slide the drivers seat forward and remove the service hatch, not look in the area above the air filter pipe and see if you can identify your system from this image:

Let me know which you have and I'll see what info I can dig up for you....(I've got some wiring diagrams etc.... )

Regards,

Bruce.

Blow plug circuit

Post by MardyDelica »

hI, bruce,
most of the delica here came from japan & mostly as i see many delica i fix has a quick glow plug system. you are right it has 2 system but most of this delica has 2 relay as you show the picture.its a super quick glow system. technically not easy to fix . somebody has to know the system before he can fix it. like Me & argo says maybe corrosion ,contact & relay. this vehicle sometime burn the relay when they ship the car from japan port to Van port most delica has a bad battery.so people who put this van to the ship boost the battery & sometime they over volts the system & burn the relay or ECU. this glow plug system is very sensitive. i did change one ECU for delica already with 60 kms on it.after all the things been change. so its not easy. we dont know what happen to this car when they do transport. its not easy to find the fix on this. also its old car.anything could go wrong.
