slow idle on wvo

So I got a good supply of clean veg and was able to test out the system. It runs like a champ, but for some reason. idle s very low, about 500 rpm in gear. Out of gear fine. Any ideas?

How does it idle in gear while on diesel? And is it mostly low rpm in early stage or same with engine fully warm up? A very small air leak in your system could cause this issue.

Cheers

It does run slow when in gear with diesel, but with veg it's at least 100 RPM slower. Diesel is marginal, but with veg it's too slow.

I'm getting a sense that the IP is having a hard time pulling the grease through the filter. I originally had a cheap, inline one installed as extra insurance and to help the main filter last, and it was too much for the pump, and I had to remove it. When I had a Mercedes 300D, that pump could suck a golf ball through a garden hose, and you could throw in as many filters as you want. Obviously this is a different beast. I suspect an extra inline pump is called for.

OM617 that is a great motor!!!

Hey,
The OM617 has/had a Bosch inline injection pump.
The Cummins 12 valve(6BT) from 94 to 98.5 had a similar Inline pump (nicknamed "p-pump" P7100)
Very robust and dependable which I believe contributes
To those two engines being near the top as far as most reliable and longest lasting ever made.
I saw someone posted a 4M40 (l400) engine with an inline pump that was probably used for a forklift or genset. I would imagine there is a similar set up for a 4D56 somewhere out there.

As far a the 4D56 goes having your oil hot and clean
Is going to be more crucial for sure.

I would agree with you that having a non heated small filter would not be desired as it would put unwanted stress on the injector pump.

Right On! 8-)

Slow idle is due to clogged filters INSIDE the IP. 2 inside the L300 IP. Crud in veg oil. Especially when going up a steep street, with clouds of black exhaust.

Christine.

PS: do replace air filter also, that makes huge difference (test if by taking filter out and listen if idle better.

Well, it was bad idle from the get go, and only got worse after 500km of driving. I would have thought the fuel filter should keep junk like that out of the injection pump filters?
I just installed a lift pump and it idles fine. which possibly corroborates the clogged IP filter, or the main fuel filter isn't't breathing easy, or the pump in the injection pump itself is marginal.
With all this mucking about with WVO conversion, I've noticed a significant leak coming from the IP. I don't know if it was there before, the use of veg made it worse, or the use of veg has caused this. From what I can see it seems to be leaking from a seam between a top section and the main pump body. It it common that using veg will cause a Injection pump leak?

That top part is a common IP leak that you can fix
Yourself or cheap.
Good point on air filter too.
Just have to watch out for restriction of oil flow.
A restricted flow will exacerbate an air leak.
You want the veg oil as clean as possible to start with of course.
The viscosity difference between hot and cold WVO is huge and pumping cold WVO is Hard on the IP.

What in line pump did use?

Keep at it!

Right On! 8-)

How can one fix the ip leak?

I did a quick search and there's a rubber O-ring between the governor body and main pump body. It can be replaced without pulling the pump, but it's delicate work.

The links are here: https://www.socialtext.net/delica/injec ... eak_repair

I just used a generic electric diesel fuel pump from Lordco. I haven't had the best of luck with these as the quality is so-so, but I didn't want to spend $150.00 on a pump on a guess. Time will tell if it lasts.

So if your IP leaks it will let air in your system and will give you rough start in the morning sometimes with white smokes and will run better after a few minutes of driving... Am I on the right track?

Actually, no symptoms at all except for the mess it leaves under the van. Runs great under diesel, idles poor under veg oil (even after I installed a lift pump, grrr). I just finished installing the new pump seal and it no longer seems to leak, so we'll see if it helps the low veg idle.

SOO?! Did it help with the WVO slow idle?

Nope. Neither new pump nor fixing leak helped. But I have noticed a significant increase in power and less smoke on acceleration. 8-)
