Lower mainland/Van Isld Veg/Canola OIL PRICES beat the pump!

Post by jessef »

Starting a rolling thread.

Diesel prices can get up there. For those that run wvo/svo, this is your alternative unless you have a less costly source.

Region : Lower mainland, Fraser Valley, Vancouver Island, Sunshine Coast, Sea to Sky

Where : Costco, Safeway, Coop, etc...

What : Canola, Veg, Rapeseed, Palm, Cottonseed and Corn oils.

Cost per liter : $ 0.000 / L

This is my plan when I'm in the states. Looks like a great solution to beat rising fuel prices.

Diesel at Superstore is $1.31 a liter less 5 cent discount = $1.26

I am always a little cautious of running cooking oil in any of my diesels. I have taken a 1.9 vw diesel motor apart with 100,000 kms and seen the rings complete carbon and seized in the grooves. I know in tdiclub.com their are many problems occuring also with the direct injection motors.

A rebuilder who works at New West Fuel Injection strongly recommend not running it also.

Just a thought for people to consider the savings if any and do your research as repairs could be expensive.

We are all IDI (indirect injection) here that love to drink wvo/svo. TDI and DI's have the problems. Discussion can be done in another thread. This is only for pricing alternative fuels. :M

Don't forget tho'; Canola oil has about 10% lower energy density than diesel, so your mileage should suffer by around the same amount:

Still, at $1.46/L here in Vancouver for diesel lately, it's pretty darn close...

Also don't forget that diesel price has tax built in. If my sources are correct, any cooking oil in a container is subject to HST. True?

I did a LOT of research on going WVO, and the common theme of engines doing what your describing above was owner who did not let their motor get to operating temperature first AND having oil at the correct temp. before switching over. Even if it is +35C out side I make sure that my motor is HOT before I switch over. I did over 80K on my '99 Surbarban without a hick-up. I hope to do significantly more on my L400.

On a side note, I recently installed my +200L WVO tank and will be putting in an air back rear suspension in the next month to deal with the added weight. She is sagging pretty good right now.

Hi all...has anyone checked the price of new Canola at Costco versus Lower Mainland (and Kamloops!!) diesel lately?
Saw 150.9 in Kamloops the other day... ouch!
BTW, lots o' cubies of WVO sitting and settling here in Salmon Arm, ready to be run through the 1 micron filter. More than I can use. Just in case anyone needs any on the way by.
Stop by for a free 16L, bring your own jug.

Donations to Dogwood Initiative appreciated and will be forwarded to them if you put a donation in the "Dogwood" Can.
