WVO for trip from Kamloops BC/Toronto, ON/NYC/Florida

Post by SandraBurkholder »

I know that it is a long shot to be able to get WVO for our entire trip, but our family is hoping to do a lot of iton WVO. We will follow the Trans Canada through to Toronto and probably major highways from there to Florida. Is there anybody along this rather unspecified route that would sell us WVO? Our children are going to blog about our attempt on our earthship site www.darfieldearthship.com as we start to get organized. We will leave BC mid December. Now, we just have to get the Delica converted. :)

i have done a few extensive west coast wvo trips. the key to finding wvo is extensive google searches, forum memberships, emails, facebook
google a city or town you are going through like this: "springfield wvo" "springfield green" "Sustainable springfield" "springfield biofuel" "springfield organic coop" you get the idea. email organizations and ask them to ask their membership can anybody help. look for forum posts in diesel forums "ford diesel forum" "powerstroke forum" etc. sometimts youll find a person giving tips to someone else. join the forum and PM the person who posts about wvo. put in craigslist ads. theres also facebook groups dedicated to wvo. it takes time, alot of time, but it pays off. i have unlimited wvo range from montana south to colorado and west of both of those, due to deep digging.
of course there is http://fillup4free.com/ but it is unmoderated. i rarely get a response.
good luck!!!

thanks for the tips...I will get started! I'm a pretty good researcher but right now my time seems to be divided between getting it converted, planning the trip, working for the money to fund the trip, homeschooling the kids...you get the picture. Thankfully, I have a couple of kids who are computer savvy who are motivated to help!

Any idea when you're coming through Virginia? If you stop in the Richmond area I might be able to help you find some WVO around there, as I will be NE of there in Walkerton, VA :-) There are a few restaurants around there that we can check. I'd love to see your van & hear more about your Earthship adventure! :-D

No help on WVO, but if you are coming through Niagara Falls, you are welcome to stop in/get together/use tools/etc. at my place.

Whenever you travel and randomly add WVO you must be sure of the quality of what you are adding. Many people are aware of the water content but acid content has damaged many engines and pumps, and is not as easily checked.

This is a good link to spend some time with if you have not already done that.

Best of luck on your trip.

We are now in Ontario for the week but will start to head south next week. Not sure of our route...some may be hearing from us! As to acid content. I had a friend who works in a lab test the local A&W oil we get and it is 5.8, so very close to netural. That doesn't speak to the acid content from Ontario or US sources, though.

Update: We are now in North Carolina and out of oil, so running on diesel. DelicaDJ, I totally forgot about your offer, but it was a bit of a harried day, regardless. I'm now on the hunt for oil in Orlando area and then westward toward California and then back up to BC. We've done very well; 4700 kms so far on oil. I had heard that there are more people in the states selling WVO than in Canada, but it certainly is difficult to find them! I've been hitting the fillup4free site in states I know we will be travelling through. When we are driving, our days are long, and less time to research potential sources. C'est la vie!

not sure what your opinions are on New veggie oil, but since you are back on diesel maybe pop into costco and see how much they sell their 20 liter jugs of canola oil for, could be cheaper than diesel down in the states.

Hi all, update: We left Key West with a full stock of oil thanks to the owner of a small vegetarian cafe there. In some areas they are used to WVO...that oil took us to almost Texas. We tried to get oil in Taos when we rented an earthship for the night (to show the kids what ours could look like when we were finished), but they have tons of demand on their oil. Have been trying to track down oil in California as that is where we are heading now. In Las Vegas til tomorrow and have a few feelers out. Trip has been good...www.darfieldearthship.com for a map of where we've been. Sandra

Thank you for the info...I did find some through Craig Reece of plantdrive (US) who knew of somebody. But I will definitely check out your links. I'm thinking I should compile all the great leads I've received over the last 5 weeks and post all of them here. fillup4free.com has been helpful, but I find that it is not kept as up to date as it could. Having said that, with work, I find many generous people willing to give us oil, but by the time we had located and received a response, we were often 600 kms down the road. Thanks again!

If on your way back home, you come to the island, I can load you up with as much as you can hold. I just gave away 23 cubes, and am down to about 4000L of ready to go wvo. for some reason the river of wvo that flows through Victoria has made a consistant stream past my door...

Thanks, but I don't think we're headed to the island on the way back...we are getting tuckered out! But your supply is good to know about. It seems lots of people are looking! Interestingly, somebody in the upper Fraser Valley saw my post, googled my email address(because he didn't want to joint the forum) and got my friend Cheryl Kabloona's address (who is the head of hte Kamloops chapter of BCSEA) and she thought it was spam at first, then realized I was the intended recipient...to shorten a long story; this fellow has scads of oil, and has given up his WVO dreams for the time being. Fortunately that IS on our way home, plus we have family passing by all the time. Hey, I'm accumulating quite a few people who have oil to give/sell. Would anybody be interested in a little site for sharing? While we've been gone from Darfield, my father has been collecting from our source, so our supply has been growing while we've been away. I had been using fillup4free.com to get contacts, but that site is somewhat out of date, so I had to really work at it as we headed across North America... I usually found somebody wiling to give/sell in a region just AFTER we left it.

in my opinion, better to share wvo sources privately on a request basis. i know some of my sources that are not in business do not want to be part of a publicly published list of veg burners.... glad youre making out okay!!!
