IS there a filter screen on the l300 delica where the fuel arrives at the IP?

WVO filtering, WVO conversion information, biodiesel fuel issues, etc.

IS there a filter screen on the l300 delica where the fuel arrives at the IP?

Post by Jedidiahwiebe »

Hey there, sorry to have not introduced myself here in wvo land despite being an active poster for 6 years on the l300 section. I've been on veggie for a while now. Several years. 50 thousand or so km. It's a full plantdrive kit with all the bells and whistles. Always runs good, I only use beautiful clean oil filtered to 1 micron.
Suddenly, yesterday morning the ol van has no power. And I mean NO power. Can't get 'er to rev up past 2k in neutral! Was doing 40 or 50 down the hwy, and 20k up hills. Still idles smoothly, and no weird smoke except bit of black at startup which isn't normal. Feels a lot like a clogged filter so first thing I did was change the diesel filter. Didn't change a thing. Runs the same on veggie, didn't feel the need to change that filter too. I'm getting good flow at the IP my fuel primer bulb pump doomahicky had no problems sucking up fuel. Boost line isn't leaking. I changed that, boost diaphragm seems good too, and boost pin moves up and down.

So I'm back to wondering... is there a screen somewhere inside the injector pump that can clog up? Running WVO one would assume that if there was such a screen it eventually would clog for some reason or other.

Anyone had a mystery fuel supply issue like this before? Know if and where the fuel is screened at the FIP?

After a very helpful conversation with Ed from Plantdrive I did locate one screen on the outflow of the IP. Inside the banjo bolt's bolt is a mesh screen which protects the tiny hole in the side of the banjo bolt's bolt. The tiny hole leads to the fuel return line. I'm guessing the reason it's such a tiny hole is to maintain some backpressure inside the pump or something. Anyways. Ed said that he'd seen a VW rabbit with similar symptoms (sudden loss of power) and all they had to do was clean this screen gizmo to get 'er back on the road again.

Didn't work for me. Oh, and there is no screen on the fuel shutoff either. sucked about 3/4 liter of atf into the fuel pump and am gonna leave it overnight. See if it loosens something up.

I did see a comment here on the forum by TardisDeli that there are two such screens in the IP. Haven't located the other one yet. Would not be surprised if the other one is gummed up. This one was looking pretty gungey.

This is so great, thanks for the reply. I do not seem to have a filter there. I'm probably in a similar situation as Manfred G. who writes:

"Who (like me), the filter will only not with him, probably because
it already has someone thrown completely out who gets it
not the friendly Mitsubishi dealer."

Ahh well. I shall persist a wee bit longer trying to un-gum the pump before swapping another one in there.

Here's a link to a picture of the inside of my IP: http://imgur.com/UmI2ZMR

Replaced the IP, and it runs good. There was a ton of crud in there. Coating everything. I ran a concentrated dose of injector cleaner/ clearance priced snake oil through it for a while so that might have contributed to the fact that it was all soft and peeled off at the lightest touch as you can see in the picture.

WHAT AM i DOING WRONG here with my veggie system that i am getting this build up? I need to correct the problem before i eat another injector pump. As a sidenote, I have had the cyl head off a few times and there is minimal sign of coking or carbon buildup in there, nothing at all beyond what you'd see on a regular fuel engine of it's age.

I have a hotfox fuel preheated pickup in the tank, insulated lines, heated vegtherm filter mount, and one of those 12v inline electric thermostatically controlled heaters right before the IP. Am I not purging long enough?

I haven't been de-watering my fuel beyond simply letting water settle out, quite thoroughly and heating the oil during filter so that it can settle out. I have, however only been taking clear, non cloudy... clean veggie oil ALL this time. That's been my main de-watering method... just not using water contaminated oil.

Can anyone think of what might have caused this build up?

Looks to me like you're not purging enough. Always purge even if you are just running into the shops for 10 minutes. Any impurities settle out quickly when hot and sitting, so if you turn off the van with veg in the pump crud will settle out. No short trips on veg either or idling on veg for more than 5 min or so. If you hit bumper to bumper traffic purge and back to diesel. Again if you don't have good flow of veg through the pump crud will settle out. Could be fat in your oil also. If you do all of your filtering inside in a controlled environment the fat may not be noticeable. How long do you let your oil settle for? What's your filtering process after settling? What type of restaurants do you get your oil from?
