Oh no doubt about egr recircing soot in but keep in mind egr only comes on during specific times/temps and is shut off during accel etc. most egr is coupled with a regen system.... Our system is basic it's like the chisel and stone version... Easiest thing would be to unplug it, or maintain system I guess

Falco...curious where you get the 25% gain...makes no sense. You really should stop throwing numbers around with no factual documentation. The diesel engine will actually run cooler with an EGR installed, just not more efficient. Here is a good old Wiki Quote fresh off the net:
"By feeding the lower oxygen exhaust gas into the intake, diesel EGR systems lower combustion temperature, reducing emissions of NOx. This makes combustion less efficient, compromising economy and power."
True, the EGR gases will displace oxygen in the combustion chamber, but this is limited to under 3% in most driving conditions .....so please explain the 25%?

In the grand scheme of things blocking it off does not do damage... I say do what ever makes you happy!

I don't need factual documentation, I saw it for myself when I cleaned out my stuffed up EGR valve. As you may have read in my post:
  • "... My city mileage went from 8.5 kilometres per litre to six. My engine was running hotter with less power and pouring black soot out the tailpipe. I was genuinely chuffed. ..."

I keep a log and I keep track of my fuel economy. I also look at my temp gauge when I'm driving. When I drove into the garage before I cleaned out the EGR there was no soot coming out the tail pipe, when I left there was. I'm not going to disregard my findings & experiences because someone stated something in Wikipedia ~ and as useful a tool that Wikipedia is, it has been found on occasion to be incorrect. I have a good friend that edits for Wikipedia, on occasion he comes across errors, hence his job.

I understand the theory of reintroducing inert gasses into the chamber so theoretically less fuel will burn, ergo running cooler but consider this: The inert gas you've just reintroduced into the chamber has very recently been a part of a very hot explosion and is consequently very hot. This heats up the motor, and because it is inert it's now smothering the fire somewhat, which results in unburned diesel going out your tail pipe in the form of black smoke* but there is still an explosion happening, which is still hot.

Incidentally, regarding the quote you posted ~ the last half of it clearly states: "This makes combustion less efficient, compromising economy and power."

Falco.

*Less diesel being burned means less power to the propeller shaft.

Before this gets too carried away, Id first like to say I like you Falco, you bring a lot to this forum. Not being facetious :-D

..lets just say (or I'll just say) that your particular engine was 22% less efficient that most well tuned delica's. Maybe had something to do with the IP adjustments you made before the EGR omit. Either way, you obviously have more time to discuss this that I am willing to offer so...
Side note: Perhaps using the stock EGR intake gasket would have prevented the galvanic reaction on your block off plate. Welding to cast aluminum intakes is a far riskier proposition.

2 points.

Any increase is purely subjective, an x% increase that is repeatable shows what the egr does in terms of lessening in efficiency, but any singular piece of data, called an anecdote, is purely a before and after for a very particular set of circumstances. Or in other words, the failed EGR of Falcos was causing a loss that is abnormal compared with everyone else.

Why even bother blanking off in between the EGR and the manifold, just rip the whole thing off and put decent thick plates over the holes. Thin plates have been known to fail.

Awww shucks fellas! I love you all, too! And Evan, I'm usually up for a beer, drop me a line when you're next in the neighbourhood.

Bionic, I paid $100.00 to have a clean seal weld job done, which has not failed me. This price also included the steel lozenge that went over the exhaust manifold end. Perhaps that is a little steep compared to the bold on kits, I know Dennis has a good kit with the quarter inch aluminium plate for the intake end.... But now I'm not worried about it. Whether my EGR was broken... I don't really know ~ all I know was when I opened it up, someone had jammed it up with what appeared to be glazing putty mixed with all the other crap in there. Had I known better I would have left it as it was, would have saved me a tun. I have since re-tweaked my IP, a quarter turn is way too great, as I've discovered. Currently I get roughly 24 miles per gallon in the city and as good as 36 miles per gallon on the open highway* and I get plenty of power for what I need. Her cruising sweet spot is between 105 & 110 where the mileage is optimum. Not bad for a twenty year old Komusume.

When I first tried to "blank" the unit with the mild steel plate I tried to keep the original aluminium gasket but could get it to fit in. I probably over tightened the bolts, as well, exacerbating the situation. I guess it's true that we live and learn^. I removed the whole device and now I have more space in the engine compartment to fit something, maybe my tea pot... grins.

Falco.

*I estimate a 5% error in the speedo as I'm thinking my 235/75R15s are slightly lesser than the 215SR15s that were originally on the vehicle. When I drive down the highway and I have my GPS unit operational I find my speedo is reading 105 when my GPS is consistently reading 100.

^I hope.

Back to the topic : Strada92, who is now an L400 owner after selling his Strada, lives not far from my place: whenever it will be engine related, he will be my Mechanic :) So, I had to replace a warped exhaust manifold so at the same time he did performed the Galium modification and adjusted the Turbo accordingly. I can confirm having now more power with my L300 ! On those hills where I was stuggling to get to the top I now go a few extra Kph 8-) and even was able to get some slow acceleration where it was not possible before  .....The least you can say is that it is noticeable  Now, you still have to watch for your EGT carefully, (ex in highway situations) to stay in the "safe" range :o

sooooo long story short from a newb should I look at getting rid of my EGR or not hahaha. I ask because Im getting about 400km to a full tank of diesel on my 91 Delica, when I say a full tank that until it gets to the E not until the light comes on. Is this typical?

400km is typical. For me, at least. I discovered that the light on mine comes on when the needle is about 1/8th tank *below* E- another 100km before the light comes on, and then allegedly you have 50km before you run out completely.

Anyway... it sounds like your EGR is working properly. Or so clogged with soot it's auto-deleted itself. Probably the latter.

Just performed this mod. I feel a slight amount of lower end power increase. Mainly the coolant temp gauge is higher during cruise. I assume because of the additional fueling. I'll tell you one thing; the higher EGTs must have cleaned out some soot because it runs awesome now.

If anybody is interested I have taken this modification a little bit further. My van is running upped boost and a tweaked MFIP however I still found the van lacked on the freeway and the EGTs were to high. Working with Colt Cams we have come up with a street grind for the 4D56T which I have now been testing in my van for the past 6 months. The new profile allows more in air into the engine and allows it to escape faster than the stock camshaft. It is ground for mid to high range performance which means on the freeway at cruising speed my van no longer feels like it has a hit a brick wall. Hill climbing is much more stable and the van no longer bogs down to a crawl as it falls off its power band.

Up next will be a bottom mount exhaust manifold in hopes of eliminating the terrible 90/180 bends the exhaust must travel through, Garret T2 turbo and an inter-cooler. If anybody is interested in giving one the cam shafts a go please feel free to contact me. Prices will require a core in return so I can get more made. Not looking to cash in on this, just help out the L300 crowd so we can keep up with traffic..

Neat! It's been a while since anyone tried changing the cam. I have a tame cam grinder who's worked with me on a few engines, he's not quite come around to the idea of tuning a 4D56T yet but we'll get there :-) In the meantime I'll just keep it in 4th and let the torque do the work.

I'm curious about what the specs are for your modified cam though.
