Replace factory stereo - L300 (best choice?)
Thanks in advance for any advice or guidance:
I’m going to replace the stereo head on my 93 L300. I want to put one in that has the following features:
1) back up camera
2) fits well
3) easy to use and connect with iPhone
4) easy interface
Any must-have features you think I’m missing?
Any advice or guidance on which ones I should be looking to buy/install?
Thanks

I have the same van and the first thing I did once I bought it was replace the stereo. There are many great choices out there when it comes to deciding on which stereo to purchase. The one thing I can tell you is that the space for the stereo is larger than most so you'll need to purchase whats called a Double Din. I'm not sure what that stands for, but it's basically a unit that's twice as large as a regular one. I can watch videos on mine, and it easily connects to my cell phone. I added a subwoffer right behind the drivers seat, and with the factory speakers, the whole thing kicks pretty well!!
The set up I would have prefered is a regular sized stereo unit for one half of the space and pop out drink holders for the other half. I believe this was an option for our vans. I've seen photos, but I've yet to find one for sale. I'm hoping someone with decent 3D Printing skills might make one some day. You will quickly find that the place for the drink holders is not in a great spot, and you need to be a contortionist to access your beverages.
Cheers, Phil

I am in the middle of re-vamping the sound myself. I just replaced the head end with a Kenwood DDX9704S which has bluetooth, Apple Car Play and Android Auto, calling, nav, spotify, back up and dash cam, plus many more features. I picked up last years model at almost half price. Pretty happy with it. Next job is to run wires for an amp and s/w!

or you could rip out the stereo, fit a 7 inch tablet in there and use bluetooth speakers that can be controlled from the tablet and your phone. the tablet could also double for navigation, watching videos, etc. etc. Haven't looked but there must be some bluetooth cameras that could hook up to an app on your tablet. I was halfway there before my tablet resting on the dash slid and flew out the window on a turn up in the hills above Palm Springs :)

I’m planning on booking up a Bluetooth Amp and fresh speakers. Ditching the head unit all together. Was actually thinking of fitting the factory oem unit back in for looks. Anyone done this?

I just installed a double DIN Boss Audio PVCP9675A head unit which supports a back up camera, Apple CarPlay, and was only $220 USD on Amazon when I purchased it. Was a simple install to do, apart from running the video cable for the camera.

I’ve been thinking about which stereo head unit is best. Clarion makes a unit that is 2din but also the size of simply two stereos at just under four inches which is good for the aesthetics of our dash.

However, after reading this post and doing a little surfing I’m thinking the tablet idea is worth investigating. Here is a link that has a fella wiring it all in to work like a real car multimedia system the second he is in the car. Pretty neat.
