Hello folks,
Just thought I'd share with you a fantastic little mid I did to my L300 today. It's bit really even a mod because it was too easy.

Anyway, I was looking at a VW Eurovan with a fiamma bike rack attached to the rear hatch and thought, I bet this would almost bolt right on to the rear hatch of a Delica L300. These racks are custom made in Italy out of Aluminum to hard mount to specific vehicles. I had one on my '79 Westy and it was the bomb.

So I found a used one and bought it to see if it would work. And it did, like it was meant to fit this vehicle from the factory. I'm thrilled with the results and how simple it was to install. Go Westy sells new ones, but they're not cheap. Used ones come up from time to time, and that's how I found mine. I wish I knew how to add photos so you could see what I'm talking about, but I've never been able to figure out how to do this on here:(

Anyway, just thought I'd share this with everyone. Really looking forward to camping season.

I've never been able to figure out how to post pictures on this site unfortunately. If you PM me your email, I could probably send you a photo that way. I can tell you this, it's the best mod I've done on my van. Google Fiamma Bike Rack for Volkswagen Eurovan. If you look at the images, you'll see how similar both rear tailgates are. It's the easiest way to mount bikes on the rear of your Delica.

Yes, and the beautiful thing is that it fits the rear of an L300 just like the red Eurovan in the picture. It looks as though it was manufactured to fit on the rear of our vans. Best mod I've done yet!!

I'm expecting a no. But would it be possible to upgrade the liftgate struts to lift ... with bikes mounted?

Actually the answer is a yes. I had a Terzo ladder on my rear hatch before installing the Fiamma Bike Rack. My struts became weak over time (even before I had the ladder installed) so I sent them to Strutwise out in BC. The guy that owns the place is great. We talked about adding extra reinforcement for the ladder and he said it was no problem. I'm from Ontario so I shipped them out, and when I got them back, they were better than new.

My hatch opens no problem with just the bike rack on the rear, but I doubt it would with the added weight of a few bikes. Anyway, I no longer have his number, but I would look up Strutwise and call him. Perhaps he can charge up the struts to hold up everything. Just remember that the more power you put into the struts, the harder it is for the hatch to close with less load on them.
