I need some ideas for the bed

I've been building a sleeping platform for me and my partner, we'll be using a futon mattress 6' long and about 55" wide. I've built a permanent platform that's 50" long, with 18" storage space below. There's a 22" extension to the platform we'll attach when it's in bed mode. We haven't yet determined how it will be supported from underneath. It's supported at the attached end as it sits on a "lip" that's supported by legs. This extension will just slide under the mattress when not being used. We're considering some kind of folding or detachable legs on the end, and also some kind of cable system that would attach to the middle seatbelt bolt and would be supporting the extension from above.

Wondering if anyone has any simple/elegant solutions we haven't thought of? Or seen a similar setup?

Here are a couple pics to give you an idea...

I have a "drawer" on mine that slides out with a folding piece that comes over top. Its a pain in the ass, I would orefer a setup like yours, unfolding the center piece with the mattress on is annoying. Did you keep your middle seats? My platform rests on the middle seats turned backwards.

Oh yeah, I think I saw photos of yours...I wanted to keep the middle seats but there just wasn't enough room with a SWB. The drawers idea is pretty slick. Our extension doesn't fold, although that was a thought, but opted to not mainly because of what you just said (I'm also not sure it would work with the height of the platform). We'll just remove it and slide it under the mattress. Thanks!

How long is your extension? I wonder if 22" is too long to use drawers with...I imagine the rails would have to be pretty strong to support our weight.
