L400 Bed/Bench

Post by ilikemax »

I'd like to build a fairly simple folding or sliding bench/bed for my 95 L400. Plan is to remove the fold-up rear seats but leave the middle captains chairs in place. I'm fairly handy but far from skilled so simple is best...

I've searched through the posts here and have found a few interesting L300 camperization type mods but haven't come across anything on an L400. I'm not super familiar with the differences/limitations between L300/L400 so I'd like to start with a template suited for the 400 right of the bat. Any suggestions? I'm sure there is a thread or two hiding in here that I simply haven't uncovered yet.

Found this one but cant seem to get the pics to show up

I was was going to do a variation of this to my l400 Before I sold it. No reason why something similar wouldn't work in an L400. The whole thing can be swapped out in about 1/2 hour.

@glenn,@DeliTan,

Those are both quite great. I especially like the one with the bulkhead as you can keep both middle captains chairs and have separate area in the back for storing gear.

thanks alot!

That's awesome Glen. So you are saying you can switch from back folding bench to the bulkhead or back in 30 minutes? That is wild. How much did that cost you to do if you don't mind me asking?

Yes, I really have switched from camping mode to seating mode in 1/2 hour. I think it will take more like 40 mins to put it back in. It's really easy though, the bulkhead and platform are one piece that just slip in through the hatch. The two cupboards on the side slide onto two aluminum hangers that stay attached to the van, then are secured with a couple of screws. The ability to easily switch between car camping and soccer mom mode was a primary consideration for me.

As far as cost: totally depends on you. minimally it will cost 2 sheets of plywood, one sheet 1/8" ply, a piano hinge, some screws and hardware bits, rubbermade bins, and the matresses (I think they were $40 each at JYSK) - do it all yourself for the cost of materials - so as low as a couple hundred bucks.

If you want me to make it, with a choice of wood veneer, high quality birch ply, marine grade finishes, furniture quality work - then it would easily be $1500 bucks.

Either way, I don't mind if anyone wants to copy my work for their own use - you can even have a look and measure what I have (although my van is currently in soccer mom mode).

Here's mine

It's a little more involved when switching to camping mode, but it's a pretty durable and cheap solution.
