Replacement O/D Switch

Post by izack98 »

I emailed this Australian Company regarding another item they have (Electronic Inclinometer). They responded with the info right away and also advised they have a brand new product they have just designed to replace the O/D switch in the end of the transmission shifter in the L400.
Here is a pic of it.
Old one on the left, their replacement on the right.

They cost AU $39.50 (CAN $39.79 as of today) + shipping (about AU $29.00)
In order to replace them with an OEM Mitsubishi part you have to buy the shifter stalk which comes with the switch. They fail often. There is a mod which fixes it but not sure everyone wants to take the time to do that.

The website is http://www.headley2009.com/

They also have the electronic Inclinator which is made to fit into the stock binnacle (see sinjin's earlier post for pics)

The cost of the Inclinator is AU $72.00 (CAN $72.54) + AU $24.00 shipping. They weigh 220 grams and they advise me they ship in a 500 gram air satchel. Takes about 10 days to arrive.
If anyone is interested PM me and I will ask if they would be willing to provide a group discount. Same for the O/D switch if you are interested.

Have a look at their website. They have some cool ideas still being developed. They are working on a TPS which can be controlled on the fly.

Replacement O/D Switch

Post by izack98 »

I repaired mine a couple of years ago. I didn't take any pics of the process.
Here are some instructions from the Delica UK website to remove and repair it.

First, remove the overdrive button. Slip a small screwdriver or pocket knife blade under the edge of the button, and lever it gently off. Look inside the handpiece on the gear lever, and at the front side you'll see a pillar-like section of plastic running horizontally towards the switch itself. Carefully cut away along the front of this until you come to a tiny roll pin.
Push the exposed roll pin towards the front of the car, and this will release the switch from the handpiece. Now, remove the top cover from the steering column(5 screws underneath). You may have to remove the under dash trim from below the steering column, further 4 screws.
Pull the rubber boot on the gear selector lever towards the handpiece, and feed the small wire loom which enters the lever further inside as you pull the switch free from the handpiece. Once you have this switch unit free, you will probably find on the white plastic rear of the switch, a small right angled section of spring hanging out through a small square opening.
This is the cause of the problem! You need to make up a small steel or aluminium plate to the shape of the back of the switch, and secure it with a small self tapping screw. This will hold the spring in it's proper place, allowing the switch to cycle properly.
The plate was cut from some 1mm steel plate I had laying around, and a small self tapping screw from an old electrical item was used to secure it.
Hope this helps.

There is a downloadable Word doc with great pics and instructions on the Delica UK website here:

If you can't get it. PM me and I can send it to you.

Hi Jos,
If you click on the link below it will download the install instructions for our replacement Overdrive Switch. Its not a hard job. The only thing you need is a Philips head screwdriver and a soldering iron. If you don't have a soldering iron you can get a friend who has one to do it for you or take it to a local electrical shop to have that part done. Soldering takes 60 seconds.
