Other kind of performance

Post by multipla »

Performance is mostly thought of as being hp's and torque, in my opinion , the health of an engine is best seen in economy, a worn engine will just eat fuel , more then it needs...
My previous car (Fiat 1.9td) 'ate' no more then 4.8 l/100km on the average.
With a best of 3.6 l/100km
Now me and my wife make a sport of being the most economical drivers, so surprise, the L400: NOT THAT ECONOMICAL!! :-)
We average 8.9 l/100km now.
Wich is not bad, but not what could be. :-)
I was thinking on a rear diff. for less rpm on the freeway, don't know if there is a bolt-on solution..
Did anyone do this before?, i had a Lada Niva for 4+4 performance, i just need my L400 for people and load carrying.

Yeah that's amazing milage, I don't think you'll see better. I get 13.5L/100km combined city/highway.

Thanks for the reply, i will look into that.
I know this number is already very good.
We tend not to boost the engine too much : second gear 20km/h, third gear 30km/h fourth gear 40km/h, 5th 50km/h.
I have a rear wheel drive 4d56 turbo, no i/c with no extra's what soever, no a/c, no power windows, so i think about the lightest version there is.
Biggest enemy for economy is rpm's on the freeway , so was hoping on swapping the rear diff. with bolt-on replacement.
If possible with lsd, because with the leafsprings, it's somewhat tailhappy.
Bigger tyres is not an options because of mot.
Oh, i already did the EGR-blinding and the injection is set to 5 degrees, not the European recommended 9 degrees (smoke!!!) :-)

Also keep in mind that with a taller final drive it would take more energy to get up to the cruising speed. It may save you a few pennies on the highway, but you might end up shooting yourself in the foot in town.

I understand (I am a mechanic :-) ) i feel the engine has enough torque for a taller final drive.
Also i am working on intercooling it.

Since i am mostly looking for an economic performance here's what i did: i put a (large) intercooler on the car and drove it a while, for city use it didn't make any diffrence ...
For highway use it did a little , but the time it takes for the turbo to spool cost me some extra fuel ,so on average no diffrnce....
When i do +100 km's there is a 0.5l advantage over non-intercooled, but it just isn't that 'fun' to drive.
Btw when wet , ( leaf springs!) i can give Ken Block a run for his money ;)
Just for info: since new the car has gone true 1 clutch, 1 starter motor, 1 starter solenoid and 1 diesel pump
Also the open diff is shit (pardon my french ;) ) i really need an lsd!!
Real good car and wouldn't hesitate to buy an other Mitsubishi!
